Description

The Vas Ocalam class of starship was designed as a versatile transport with a large number of uses for both military and governmental agencies.

Almost half of the internal volume of the transport is composed of the large cargo bays, capable of carrying almost three times the cargo of a cruiser of its day. The other half of the ship is used for officer, crew, and passenger living quarters. The VIP quarters were luxiourious enough that even the Praetor has been known to travel on these ships.

As a cargo vessel, on of the Vas Ocalam's most prominent features is its shuttlebay. For its size, this transport has the largest shuttlebay and shuttle storage of many ships in the quadrant. In addition, with modifications to the cargo bays, these ships have been used quite effectively as small shuttle and fighter carriers.

Of course, the greatest advantage of this class of transport has always been its speed. It's small size and powerful warp core allow it to achieve much greater speeds even than most military ships, save fast scouts and the like. As such, the Vas Ocalam class of ships have been used on several occasions as blockade runners on both the Federation and Klingon borders.

The Ja'telaih itself was a heavily modified version of this transport. As a result of her captain's high standing within the Senate and the other branches of government, including the Rihannsu Star Navy itself, the Ja'telaih was allowed such things as military grade dilithium and antimatter for its drives. Also, the Ja'telaih was one of the few ships of this class, aside from the purely military ones, which was armed with both disruptors and torpedo tubes. On top of that, the Ja'telaih was the first ship in the quadrant to be outfitted with an experimental subspace driver coil to its impulse drive assembly, making it much faster at sublight speeds than any ship of the time. The Federation eventually caught up with this technology when it put subspace driver coils into the impulse drives of its Ambassador class of starship.

As Captain Stefanh tr'Khnialmnae was known for extravagance, his ship mirrored this character trait as well. The botanical garden on board, also not a standard item on this class of ship, was one of the most talked about in the Rihannsu Empire. Many state affairs were held in this location, including Stefanh's own wedding.

At the time of Captain tr'Khnialmnae's flight, the Ja'telaih was one of the most sophisticated and well known starships within the Empire, outfitted with all the latest advancements and technologies. With tr'Khnialmnae at the helm, it was a formidable starship, even though it was only a transport, which taught many new warbird commanders quite a bit about turning around disadvantages during wargames.
