Personal History:
Captain Jerran is a man of two worlds, Vulcan and Bajor.  His father was a Bajoran Vedek who fled Cardassian occupation of Bajor in 2329, taking asylum on Vulcan.  He met T'Sel, a Vulcan diplomat, in 2340, and they were married in 2343.  Not too long after Terel was born, Vedek Jerran decided that he could no longer stand by and watch as the Cardassians massacred Bajorans and plundered the Bajoran system.  He returned to Bajor in 2345 to fight in the resistance, but was captured and executed during one of his first raids.  Thereafter, Terel was raised by his mother according to Vulcan tradition, something that the young half Bajoran rebelled against at every step.  Despite his reluctance to embrace Vulcan philosophy, his exceptional academic scores did not go unnoticed by the Vulcan Science Academy, and he was admitted to complete his high school education.  Mostly due to devotion to his father and his religious office, Terel believed in the Prophets of Bajor, going so far as to wear the traditional earring.  Much to his mother's chagrin, his faith paid off in 2369 when CDR Benjamin Sisko found that the Celestial Temple was a stable wormhole in the Bajor system, and that the Prophets were actually non-corporeal beings living inside the wormhole with no sense of linear time.

After graduating from the Vulcan Science Academy, Jerran Terel was admitted to Starfleet Academy, where he specialized in flight operations.  Here he discovered that flying was his first passion, and he quickly excelled at it, becoming the first freshman to command a squadron by the end of the year.  He led his squadron to win two academy aerobatics competitions.  In his third year at the academy, Jerran was assigned to the USS Columbia for his cadet cruise, where he served as a relief flight controller in the navigation department.  During this cruise, Jerran developed a reputation for being able to fly just about anything, no matter how alien the technology.

Jerran returned to the Academy in 2366 to finish out his final year.  During that time, he met St John Briggs, a younger cadet with whom he developed a very strong relationship.  They couldn't pursue the relationship further at the time, however, because Jerran was the lab instructor for a physics class Briggs was taking.  But, fait would eventually bring them together again.

After graduating from the academy, Jerran was assigned to the USS Feynman as a shuttle pilot.  He was eventually promoted to the position of chief flight control officer, where he developed a friendship with the Feynman's Medusan navigator, LCDR Belock.  Though he'd always been reluctant to practice his telepathic abilities while on Vulcan, through Belock's instructions, Jerran was able to master them in order to communicate with the Medusan without the usual translation machinery.  In 2371, the Feynman had the unfortunate distinction of becoming one of the first Federation casualties of the Dominion War.  She was assigned to the New Bajor sector of the Gamma Quadrant, exploring the region, when a distress call came from the New Bajor colony.  The Feynman responded to the distress call just as a group of Jem'Hadar ships was attacking the colony.  Having never encountered the Jem'Hadar before, the Federation wasn't prepared for their polaron weapons, which easily passed through the Feynman's shields.  In a matter of minutes, the ship was a burning wreck.  Only 23 crewmen survived, and Jerran was the only person on the bridge crew to survive.  Jerran happened to be meditating with CDR Belock when the ship was attacked, and was able to get the Medusan and himself to an escape pod.  After more than 2 months of being stranded on the surface of New Bajor, Starfleet was able to send a relief ship, the USS Istanbul to New Bajor to search for survivors.  To Jerran's delight and surprise, St John Briggs was one of the shuttle pilots assigned to search and rescue duty.

After being rescued from New Bajor, Jerran took a brief leave on Vulcan, where he and St John Briggs further developed their romantic relationship.  Jerran decided to return to Earth to teach at the Academy, and Briggs returned to the Istanbul, but they continued their relationship despite the distances involved.  When Jerran decided to get back to space duty, he was offered the position of 2nd Officer on board the USS Kirov, an Akira class cruiser.  Jerran was again surprised by Briggs when he found out that the younger officer managed to get an assignment as the chief of flight operations on the same ship.  The two were finally together on the same ship, with no obstacles.  When Jerran went through Pon Farr in 2373, Briggs accompanied him to Vulcan, where he challenged Jerran's betrothed wife to ritualistic combat in the Vulcan tradition.  Not being much of a traditionalist herself, Jerran's betrothed had already promised herself to another, and capitulated her right to marry Jerran, allowing Briggs to take her place.  For their honeymoon, Jerran and Briggs went to Bajor, where Jerran was able to explore that half of his heritage for the first time.

LT St John Briggs

As the war with the Dominion began to heat up, the USS Kirov was assigned patrol duties in sector 001.  In March of 2374, Jerran was promoted to the position of first officer.  In October of 2375, however, tragedy struck when the Breen cemented their relationship with the Dominion by attacking Earth itself.  Unbeknownst to Starfleet, the Breen had developed an energy dampening weapon, which disabled all of the defending Starfleet ships before they could barely get off a shot.  The Kirov was one of the first ships to get hit, and was destroyed almost as quickly as the Feynman had been 4 years before.  Though he was able to get to an escape pod, Jerran was devastated to find out after the battle that the Breen energy dampener had knocked out the force fields in the main shuttlebay.  St John Briggs was in the shuttlebay at the time, helping to prep the fighter squadrons for launch when the Breen attacked.  Just as their relationship was rekindled by the tragic destruction of New Bajor and the Feynman, the end was just as tragic.  Because they had been telepathically linked when Jerran underwent Pon Farr, he knew exactly when Briggs met his end.  If the Kirov's Captain Zane hadn't dragged Jerran into an escape pod, he would not have survived, either.

Sinking into the depths of his sorrow over the loss of his first love, Jerran embraced the ideals of Vulcan logic anew, attempting to hide his emotions away.  He also threw himself into work, helping to rebuild the destroyed areas of Starfleet Academy and Starfleet Command in San Francisco.  By 2376, he was offered the command of the light explorer USS Oberon, which he accepted at the insistance of his former commander, Captain Zane.  Jerran's old friend, the Medusan navigator Belock, got himself assigned to the Oberon to help with their first assignment, exploring the Briar Patch.  Through many hours of meditation with the Medusan, Jerran was able to recover from his grief over the death of St John Briggs without having to resort to Vulcan techniques of cloaking his emotions, a tactic which the wise Medusan knew would only lead to madness for the half Bajoran.

In February of 2380, the Oberon returned to Earth for a three month refit.  Despite the cost to refit the USS Rosankya, another Andromeda Class explorer, Starfleet decided to give similar upgrades to the Oberon.  The most noticeable change was that the warp engines were replaced with shorter, variable geometry nacelles, similar in design to the Intrepid class.  The cargo bay behind the aft cutout was also expanded by an extra deck to accommodate a new captain's yacht.  The yacht itself was a heavily modified Korelev class yacht, outfitted with warp engines hanging from gull wings slung over the hull, similar in design to the Danube class runabouts.  Like the Danube, the impulse engines were moved from the main rear body of the yacht to the underside of the wings.  This allowed a reconfigurable cargo section to be added to the rear, similar to the mid-section of the Danube.  Other upgrades to the Oberon included a newer forward planetary sensor array similar to the ones found on the Intrepid and Nova classes, as well as a new bridge module based on the Intrepid class.

After the refit and a short shakedown, the Oberon was sent to the Romulan Neutral Zone to participate in a special Detente program with the Romulan Empire.  In 2379, a Reman named Shinzon staged a spectacular coup, destroying the Romulan Senate and puting himself in place as the Praetor of the Romulan Empire.  Shinzon was a clone of Captain Jean Luc Picard, and with the help of a pair of Romulan warbirds, Picard and the Enterprise were able to destroy Shinzon and his thaloron weapon equipped dreadnaught, the Scimitar.  With the loss of a huge Tal Shiar fleet in 2371 in a failed attempt to destroy the Founders, the losses during the Dominion War, and the losses due to the Reman civil war, the Romulans were in an even worse state than they were after the war with Earth that ended in 2160.  They were very open to talk when Captain William Riker led a diplomatic envoy to Romulus shortly after the Reman civil war.  One result of these talks was to operate a joint Starfleet/Romulan task force in the Tarod Sector, based out of the Romulan Starbase Veloris in the Cheron system.  The Oberon has just recently been dispatched with a pair of Starfleet ships to report to the Romulan base commander, khre'Riov (Commander-General) D'ana t'Ehrowhin.
