As she wanders about scavenging, Jennsen Daggett thinks of her beloved mother brutally killed by the New World's Seeker of Truth Lord Richard Rahl. The voice she hears in her head encourages vengeance against Richard and his wife Kahlan. Unable to resist its lure, Jennsen begins her quest to destroy Richard for what he did to the only person that mattered to her.
Meanwhile having succeeded in toppling his father, Richard has opened the door to a power struggle between his stepbrothers. He has his own troubles with his continuing fight for justice with the Old World despot Emperor Jagang the Just.
