Where the exact beginning of the American Water Spaniel came from is unknown although it is believed to be that the Irish Water Spaniel, the Curly-Coated Retriever and the English Water Spaniel are included. Originally they were called the Brown Water Spaniel. They are an excellent hunting dog that will spring game rather than pointing to it. They are an effective retrievers in water as well as in rough ground and heavy brush. They are used to hunt grouse, quail, pheasants, rabbits, mink, squirrels, muskrat and retrieve ducks and geese. Primarily developed and breed in Wisconsin during the 1800s, They were mostly known in the Midwestern and New England regions. They were recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1940 but still have no exact classification due to the uniqueness of the breed and their varied ability in small game hunting.
