GARDENING BY THE MOON
	Reference: Llewellyn's 1995 Moon Sing Book and Lunar Planning Guide
Llewellyn's uses the geocentric system for determining the moon signs positions. This means the Earth is considered to be the center and heavenly bodies are viewed as the zodiac and their motions have influence on life. Almanacs are viewed as the zodiac and their motions have influence on life. Almanacs use the helicentric system with the sun as the center. The moon's place is figured astronomically and its place is given as being in the constellations. Llewellyn's views the geocentric system as the correct system for gardening and planning other important life matters.
MOON PHASES
First Quarter, increasing from the New moon, favors leafy plants and produce see outside the fruit. Broccoli, cabbage, lettuces, spinach, basil, dill etc. Cereals and grains are also favored and cucumbers is the exception to the seed outside the fruit rule.
Second Quarter favors annuals that are viney and produce seed inside the fruit. Melons, beans, squash, tomatoes, peppers, etc.
Light of the Moon, from New moon to Full moon favors the plantings of annuals that produce their yield above ground.
Third Quarter, decreasing from the Full moon, favors root growth of biennials, perennials, bulbs and roots. Parsnips and carrots, onions, fennel, sage, thyme, purple coneflower, comfrey, etc.
Fourth Quarter favors cultivation and destroying pests, especially in barren signs. Some people even till at night during the fourth quarter to reduce the germination of weed seeds.
Dark of the moon, from Full moon to New moon favors the root of perennials, biennials, bulbs and tubers.
SIGNS OF THE ZODIAC
Aries : Barren and dry, fiery and masculine. Destroy weeds and pest.
Taurus: Productive and moist, earthy and feminine. Good for root and tubers. Also good for hardening off plants.
Gemini: Barren and dry, fiery and masculine. Destroy weeds and pest.
Cancer: Fruitful and moist, watery and feminine. Most productive of all signs. Plant anything, irrigate and fertilize.
Leo: Barren and dry, fiery and masculine. Destroy weeds and pest. Most barren sign.
Virgo: Barren and moist, earthy and feminine. Destroy pest.
Libra: Semi-fruitful and moist, airy and masculine. Favors herbs, flowers, vines, hay and corn. Favors strong roots.
Scorpio: Very fruitful and moist, watery and feminine. Plant anything, especially for sturdiness. Irrigate and fertilize.
Sagittarius: Barren and dry, fiery and masculine. Plant onions and seed hay. Cultivate.
Capricorn: Productive and dry, earthy and feminine. Plant potatoes and tubers.
Aquarius: Barren and dry, fiery and masculine. Destroy weeds and pest.
Pisces: Very fruitful and moist, watery and feminine. Plant anything especially good for root growth. Irrigate.
