This information is from Scott Cunningham's Encyclopedia of Magical Herbs. It the only book I use and see no need to get another. I'm not that big into herbs, but I think I use to be because I keep growing them. Herbs for magickal purpose are like stones and colors. Your taking the energy of that object and adding it to your spell. You can do this by rubbing the herb on your candle, burning it for your incense (research it before doing this, some herbs are poisonous to burn and some can irritate the skin by rubbing). I really can't stress enough to research the herb before using. The best way to start your list of herbs is to go in your kitchen and make a list of what you already have. Then look them up in the encyclopedia or on the internet. Then you can figure out what you need to get. Good chances are that what you need is already in your home. That's what this list will be. Garlic - protection, healing, anti-theft, exorcism (banish negative energy)
Cinnamon - spirituality, healing, psychic powers, protection, success (who knew!)
Cumin - protection, fidelity, anti theft, exorcism
Curry - protection
Basil - love, protection, exorcism, wealth, astral projection
Nutmeg - health, luck, money, fidelity
Marjoram - protection, happiness, health, money, love
(I take three pinches of marjoram add it to hot water with pine sol in it and I wipe down my house. By Fire and Water (hot water), by Earth (herb) and Air (scent of the pine sol) I cleans and bless this home.)
Parsley - protection, purification
Sage - wisdom, protection, longevity, wishes
Thyme - purification, psychic powers, health, courage, love, sleep
Celery - mental and psychic powers
Dill - protection, money, love

Peppermint - purification, health (excellent for fighting the flu), psychic powers, love, sleep
