First Sunday Family Fun Day

 

First Sunday Family Fun Day features special, family-centered activities that kids and their families can enjoy for free! Bring kids ages 3-12, accompanied by an adult. Admission is free during site restoration. Each month brings a new theme that promotes creativity and visual literacy, while visitors have fun and learn about Kansas City and the legacy of R.A. Long!

 

September: “Quilts!”

Sunday, September 6

Explore the artistry and creative patterns and shapes of quilts at Kansas City Museum’s First Sunday Family Fun Day Sept. 6. Quilts have been used over centuries to tell their family histories and stories and have been passed down from family member to family member. Visitors will design and name quilt block patterns of their own using pattern blocks and paper. Patrons will also learn about the history of story quilts and create their own paper story quilt to take home with them. Visitors will also listen to stories about quilts and their history in our StoryTarium.

 

 

October: Faces of Corinthian Hall

Sunday, Oct. 4

This month, Kansas City Museum pays homage to its architectural facade as we celebrate the “Faces of Corinthian Hall.” Families can decorate and create their own mythological face using clay or create their own ad inspired by the heroes of mythology. Visitors can create their own gargoyle masks or play “matching” games. Visitors can also watch a film in our StoryTarium.

Community Curator Program

The Community Curator program of Kansas City Museum invites historians and history educators to share their perspectives on artifacts they choose from the Museum collection. This provides fresh insight about artifacts and collections of Kansas City Museum and Union Station, and welcomes diverse input from the Kansas City history community. Community Curator lectures are presented the fourth Tuesday of each month allowing the actual artifact to be presented with the observations of our Community Curator. Come to the Community Curator lecture and receive your “Community Curator” discount coupon to Pierpont’s at Union Station.

 

 

September: Barbara Brackman, quilt historian

Examine Kansas City Museum’s fabulous quilt collection at Kansas City Museum’s Community Curator Lecture Sept. 22 at Union Station. Quilt historian Barbara Brackman  will explore and research Kansas City Museum/Union Station Kansas City’s vast collection of quilts, including a 1880s “Crazy Quilt.”

 

October: Larry Lester, Negro Leagues Baseball researcher

Tuesday, Oct. 27

Explore Kansas City’s rich baseball heritage Oct. 27 during Kansas City Museum’s Community Curator Lecture. Larry Lester, Negro Leagues Baseball researcher and author of the book Black Baseball in Kansas City, will explore race and baseball in Kansas City through Kansas City Museum/Union Station Kansas City’s autographed Kansas City Monarch’s baseball.

Preservation Workshop

Handling, Storing and Showing Heritage Quilts

Sunday, Sept. 20

Quilt book editor and writer Deb Rowden will help you learn techniques of caring for and displaying historic quilts in this one hour lecture / demonstration. Rowden is an avid quilt maker and collector and is a well-known author and editor. Her new book Making Memories: Simple Quilts from Cherished Clothing was recently issued by The Kansas City Star Publishing.

Friends of Kansas City Museum

Corinthian Hall is undergoing an extensive restoration which will enhance the Museum’s presence in Kansas City’s cultural landscape. As a Friend of Kansas City Museum, you can get an up-close and personal look at the restoration progress at the Friends’ Private Hard Hat Tours. Led by Museum Director Christopher Leitch, Friends will learn about the mansion, see re-discovered original features and get a glimpse of future plans.

Ongoing Activities at the Museum Site

 

The Long Family and Corinthian Hall | Panel Exhibit at Kansas City Museum

 

The story of the Long family and their historic home, Corinthian Hall, is told in this informative exhibit, displayed on the grounds of the Museum. The free exhibit consists of eight panels detailing the Long family’s involvement in historic Northeast Kansas City, and includes photos of the estate, historic postcards of Kansas City, and a narrative developed by the Museum’s Curator of Education. Schedule a walking tour of the panels and the grounds with one of our Educational Aides in the Visitor Center or call the Museum for details at 816-483-8300.

StoryTarium Shows

The StoryTarium is the newest feature at the Kansas City Museum, where visitors can learn about Kansas City’s rich local and regional history. The StoryTarium features films, lectures and other history-related programming in an intimate auditorium that seats 40 people. It is housed in the Museum’s former planetarium. The regular programming schedule in the revamped space will feature a variety of original programs that first aired on KCPT, Channel 19.

 

Visitors can choose which films they would like to see, with 10 titles to choose from.
