January 15, 2006- updates, address book , recycle bin

Have you checked lately to see if your antivirus program is updated; I use Norton and that is the only one I have ever used so I can't speak about any other.

Usually, when we installed Norton we set it so it updates itself; however, even if mine is set that way, there are days when I check it and I find that some updates have to be downloaded; I just get ahead of it I guess. Anyway, personally I like to see with my own eyes that things are up to date, so I do this once in a while.

This is what I do:

In the taskbar at the bottom of the screen there is an icon for my antivirus program. I double click it; a window comes up and I click "Live Update" then I just follow instructions. If it is up-to-date, it will tell you so; if it isn't, it will download the latest updates. When it is done, close it.

Windows has to be updated too. It probably also is set to update on its own. You get a notification that it is doing so, or sometimes you notice a new little icon in your taskbar that goes away after a bit. If you hover your cursor over it, it will tell you what it is.

However, I'm curious by nature, and sometimes I just want to make sure that I have all the updates for Windows. It is very important. So I go to start,  all programs, windows update, and I click on it; (if yours should happen not to be exactly there, look for it, it should be close by) OK I clicked on it. It takes me to the Windows Update site. I click on express...and let it do its thing. It'll tell you if it is up to date or if you have to download some high priority updates. Say yes to high priority updates; you need them all for your computer to be as safe as possible.

Two more items to look at:

You have a trash bin on your desktop; don't forget to empty it.There are 2 ways of doing that:

1. click on it to open it; click on empty recycle bin. or

2. right click on it, and click on  empty recycle bin.

OK one more thing for today.

To add an address to your address book.

First, when  you get a message from someone and you would like to keep their address, with the message bar highlighted, click on tools at the top of the window and click on "add sender to address book"

Also, I should mention that your computer might be set up that it automatically adds senders to your address book; ok that works too.

Now, supposing you want to make changes to your address book; there are many ways of getting there but i want to show you where it is, and how to use it.

So, go to start, all programs, accessories, address book; now that you have it opened, if you wanted to delete an address from there, just highlight it, right click and click on delete.

If you wanted to add an address click on New, New contact, enter a name and the email address, click add, and ok. it will be added. You can see that in your contact list when you are in OE.

You have noticed that you can add all sorts of information in your address book. That is up to you. I don't bother; you might want to for whatever reason. It's up to you. That's it for today. Ciao for now...
