Internet Explorer

This is the button you click on when you want to go browsing on the net; I don't know what is your home page but that is irrelevant.

First, we should investigate all the buttons at the top of the window, just to see what is under there.

You will see that under FILE, you can print, open a new window, send a link or a page to someone, etc,,,

Under EDIT, you find cut, paste, etc... things you already know from OE.

Under VIEW, you will see  the options you have for setting up your browser and your net experience.

Under TOOLS, you have tools of course, the most important one in my experience being "Internet Options"

And then , of course, you have the HELP section.

Just a note here: at the bottom of the list in all the help sections there is the word "about"; that is where you click to find out the version of any program you are running.

Ok, going back to VIEW, let's see what we have here; first, you have toolbars with an arrow; if you click on the arrow, you have a list. I have all mine checked because I like to have everything at my fingertips.

Then you have status bar; that should be checked too. It is the bar at the bottom of the window where you can see the status of the page you are bringing up.

The next one, explorer bar controls what you have on the left-hand side. You won't use it much because you can also control that left pane from the top of the window.

Some of the other options, as you can see, give you control over your activity while browsing.

The next one, the FAVORITES button is very important. If you are on a page, at a site, and you want to keep the url (address) of the page, click on favorites, then add to favorites and it will be saved. The next time you want to go to that page, you will only have to click on the saved url (address) and it will take you there.

***Note: if you can't see your favorites in the left pane just click on favorites at the top of your browser, and they will appear. While you are at it, click on history which shows you your most recent visited pages; click on search and a search engine appears where you can enter some key words to try and find a page that interests you.

One last note on favorites before we move on; you will have noticed that there is a "organize favorites" that you can click on under favorites. You might have wondered what it is for. Well, let me tell you; when you get to have hundreds of favorites you will need to organize them somehow or you will get lost in the internet jungle and not be able to find anything. So, later, I will show you how to organize.

Let's move on..., we have already talked about favorites, history, search at the top of your browser. There are others too that should be noted. You have 2 arrows: one pointing left and one pointing right. These 2 arrows are to navigate when you are on a site.Supposing you opened the home page at Sears.ca and on that first page you clicked on garments; you have changed pages, obviously. If you wanted to go back to the home page click at the top on the arrow pointing left and you are back. You can navigate back and forth through all the pages in this way. When one of the arrows is greyed out, you have reached the end and cannot go any further in that direction.

The next button is STOP. That is to stop the activity you had just started. If you put in an address, and change your mind, don't want to go there, click STOP, if you wish. I must tell you I have never had to use that button. There are all sorts of ways around that.

The next button is REFRESH. Sometimes you call up a page and it comes up telling you "the page cannot be displayed" This can be due to all sorts of reasons; however, trying to refresh it sometimes brings it up, so give it a try.

and then there is the HOME button. If you decide you want to go back to your homepage, just click there.

All of the other buttons in a toolbar will be there or not depending if you added them or if they were put there when your computer was set up.

If you want to add or remove buttons on your toolbar, click on a blank spot on the toolbar; choose customize; you will have 2 lists come up. The list on the right contains all the items you have on your toolbar at the moment; the list on the left are those items you don't have on your toolbar. If you scroll through the list on the left and find one (or a few) that you would like to have, click on it and click add; it will be added. Keep doing that until you have all you want.

Happy browsing; more later; Ciao for now.
