January 18, 2006-saving from a webpage

Did you ever come across something on a webpage that you wanted to save? a recipe maybe, or some words of wisdom, or whatever?

There are 2 easy methods of saving, depending what you want to do.

First you can save it to your desktop; you can print it out later if you need to; or, you can print directly from the webpage.

Let's do first things first:

Open notepad; start/ all programs/ accesories/ notepad; ok, go to your webpage; highlight what you want to save by dragging your cursor over the words; right click and choose "copy"; now go back to your notepad by clicking on notepad on your taskbar; right click and choose "paste"; there you have it.

Now, supposing you wanted to save something else; go back to the webpage, highlight what you want to keep, go back to notepad, put your cursor where you want the entry to be, then right click and paste.Ok now, let's save it.

Click FILE at the top of notepad, click on save as; where it says File name, erase what is there and give your file a name; ex: "muffin recipe" at the very top of the saving window, next to "save in" make sure you have desktop; if you don't, browse by clicking on the little arrow and choose desktop; now click on "save" . You can go to your desktop and open your new file. You can add your own words in there; you can change the content as you wish. If you make any changes, when you go to close, it will ask you if you want to save the changes; say yes and it will overwrite the old file. No sweat.

I like Notepad for things like this. It is a very simple program; it is limited in what it can do, but it does the job for copying and saving text.

OK, just for fun, supposing you have a folder in "My Documents" entitled "Recipes" (one you have created of course) Did I show you how to do that earlier when we were talking about saving pictures? I think so....anyway as I was saying supposing you have a recipe folder in My Documents and you have now decided that you want to have this new recipe in your recipe folder and not on your desktop, what do you do?

There are many ways to do that; the one I find the simplest is : right click on the new file; choose "cut"; go to My Documents; open your Recipe folder; right click on a blank spot and choose "paste"; There it is!!!! Now, go back to your desktop; is it also there? Noooo....you cut it; if you had chosen copy instead of cut, it would still be there and you could delete at will from your desktop  either by right clicking and choosing delete or by dragging it into your recycle bin.

There you have it for saving; at any time, you can open such a file and print it. Open it, choose file and print and do your thing with your printer.

OK that was fun; what if you  wanted to print this recipe directly from the webpage? Turn on your printer; go to the webpage; highlight the words as before; go to file, print; now make sure selection is not greyed out; if it is, at the top you probably have the name of your printer; hover over it; this will activate it; now click selection; there is probably a radio button in front of it? click there. Ok now click "print". Did it work?

If you hadn't clicked on selection, it would print all of the first page which could be many, many pages...if this ever happens, click cancel as quickly as possible to put an end to the wastage of paper.

You can include graphics (photos) in this printing business, not in Notepad though.

By the way, everything I have said here also applies to an email. That's it ...Ciao for now....
