Children living with HIV/AIDS

"We need to look around us, and if we cannot see poverty, illness and despair in our own neighbourhood or ward, then we have to look harder.  And remember, we cannot be afraid to go beyond our social and cultural circles.  We have to rid ourselves of religious, racial or social prejudices and expand the boundaries of our service.  Service should never discriminate and is hardly every easy."

Ensign May 1990 - Hans B Ringger

In conjunction with the local AIDS council, my ward undertook a year long service project and brought a smile to the face of a child.

This was achieved by the presentation of Gift Hampers in early December to the local AIDS counctil who visited Homemaking and spoke to us about their job.

So what did we do to achieve this?

Quite simply - every month there was a selected "item of the month" which was be placed in a box provided.   At the end of the year, one of each of the items was placed in a hamper and presented to a child in need.  Christmas is a particularly hard time for many of the families with children who have HIV/AIDS as medications and the like is costly - with these hampers being given to particularly struggling families we believe that we made a difference.

What were the items?

The items that made up each hamper are listed below:

February

March

April

May

June

July

August

September

October

November

A packet of 24 or 36 coloured pencils

Pencil case, ruler, pencil, sharpner & eraser

A story book

A4 Sketch pad

Scrap book and a packet of fun stickers

Toy

2 Colouring books

Packet of 12 or 24 felt tip pens

Baseball cap or bum bag

Jar or can of boiled lollies

I hope that your ward supports this in such a way as my ward did!
