Aromatherapy & Pregnancy

The word armatheraphy mens 'treatment using scents' and that's exactly what it is.  Aromatheraphy is a therapeutic and complementary treament that reaches the very core of our senses through touch and smell, using the scents from aromatic oils to heal and uplift the body and spirit and make us feel better mentally and physically.

Contrary to popular belief, aromatherapy is not just massage with scented oils.  Aromatherapists do use massage as an important and very valuable part of many treatments, but they also use oils in other ways for aromatic baths and in creams, lotions, compresses and vaporisers.

Essential oils

Essential oils are the highly concentrated and potent oils which are used in aromatherapy.  They are extracted or distilled from various parts of plants and trees, where they can be found in special secretory glands or cells.  Some plants contain essential oils in their leaves or roots, others in their flowers, fruit, stem, bark or seeds.  Oil of rose, for example, is found in the flower. It is especially important to take great care in selecting oils during pregnancy and birth, essential oils can be very powerful and should be used carefully.  Find a good book or visit an aromatherapist in order to find out exactly how and what to use during preparation of your oils.
