Have More Fun With The Stars”

The above is the motto of the Huntsville Stars Booster club. On Saturday, the Boosters did just that, sponsoring a road trip to Nashville. The expedition was organized by booster club members Chuck and Lou Ann Hazelton.
42 baseball fans boarded a motor coach for the trip north to Herschel Greer Stadium, home of the Nashville Sounds. The Sounds, many who are former Huntsville Stars, are the AAA affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers.
After a stop at a Cracker Barrel for a pre-game meal the coach pulled into Greer stadium’s parking lot. For some it was their first trip to Greer Stadium where they soon saw its most distinctive feature, a guitar-shaped scoreboard. After significantly reducing the stock of the gift shops the Stars fans made their way down to their seats just past the third base dugout.
The game between Nashville and their cross-state rivals the Memphis Redbirds ended with a 6-1 Memphis victory. Nashville’s starting lineup included former Huntsville Stars Dave Krynzel, Corey Hart, Nelson Cruz, Tony Zuniga, Steve Scarborough and Jeff Housman. Ryan Knox entered the game in the 6th inning.
Housman struggled on the mound, giving up 4 runs in just 3 innings. Hart and Cruz both doubled in the contest. The only run for the Sounds scored on a Russell Branyan homerun. Branyan, on an injury rehabilitation assignment from the Milwaukee Brewers, blasted the ball on the fly onto Chestnut Street behind the right field fence.
It being the 4th of July weekend a fireworks show was scheduled after the game. Former Stars centerfielder Krynzel began the explosions a little early, being ejected from the game after being called out on strikes in the 5th. Krynzel loudly voiced his opinion as he raced from the dugout to the home plate area. He knelt down and drew a line in the dirt next to home plate, seemingly to show the umpire where the pitch crossed outside the plate. The umpire was not amused.
The Boosters
stayed for the actual fireworks show. Some
of the former Stars players, in a classy move came out to greet them and sign
autographs. Among them were Hart,
Housman, Knox, Ben Hendrickson, and Mike Adams.
The Boosters club sponsors many events throughout the season. Activities this season have included a Welcome Banquet when the Stars arrived in Huntsville. A Steak Cook-Out and a Bowling event for the players and staff have been enjoyed. An upcoming event will be a golf tournament scheduled for August 1st.
