The second Federation starship to bear the name. The Defiant is unofficially an escort vessel, but officially, its a warship which was designed with the soul purpose of defeating the Borg. It has been equipped with a cloaking device from the Romulan Empire, in exchange for all the intelligence on the Dominion. The cloak was only to be used in the Gamma Quadrant. The Defiant has no science labs, no medical database, no holodeck, no luxuries of any kind. Its only a warship. It was a prototype for a federation fleet of ships, similar to the Defiant. However, several design flaws appeared when tested. It nearly tore itself apart when tested at its full capacity. It is overgunned, and overpowered for a ship its size.

Its tactical systems a far superior to any federation ship. It uses quantum torpedoes, instead of photon torpedoes, and its phaser power has been doubled due to the fact that the plasma conduit runs through the primary phaser coupling. This system enhances the warp efficiently by 30%.

When cloaked, the cloak does not completely mask all of the power, since the defiant power signature is unusually high for a ship its size. When the Defiant decloaks, it has a very unusual energy dispersal pattern.

Crew quarters are limited and most of them don't have life support, and the bridge on the Defiant is located on deck one. Stations on the bridge are arranged according to the following.

Command chair : Center
Helm/Ops : Forward
Communications : Forward right
Tactical : Aft right
Science/Engineering : Forward left
Cloak station : Aft left

The Defiant has a shuttlebay, and escape pods as most ships do. However, instead of referring the Main Engineering as Main Engineering, the crew of the Defiant refer to it as the Engine room. The ship also has a mess hall, which holds replicators and tables for the crew to sit at. Along with that, the ship also has a sickbay, which lacks in the typical sickbay equipment.
The runs on a typical crew compliment on 47 people, but that number may change depending upon the mission.
