Ben Sisko brings his son to his new command, Deep Space Nine.It is a Cardassian Space Station orbiting Bajor, a conquered world that is being evacuated by the Cardassians as the result of a peace treaty with the Federation. Ben must work with frankly distrustful Bajorans who are not at all sure that the Federation is any better than the Cardassian occupation. His 2nd in command, Major Kira, has spent her whole life fighting the Cardassians and has a very combative attitude. Odo, is chief of security, is not only not humanoid, but is the sole known member of a shape-shifting race. Odo's attitudes toward order and justice are very inflexible. Quark, a Ferengi bar owner, gives us our first consistent view of Ferengi behavior, including the Ferengi, _Rules of Acquistition_. The space station is positioned in orbit over a new discovery, a stable black hole that allows instant travel to a far distant quadrant of space.The Bajorans, a very religious people have a very different view of the phenomenon.
