The Federation starship USS Voyager enters a region of space known as the Badlands, while in pursuit of a Maquis ship. Both ships are transported into the territory of the powerful Gazons, and when the Maquis ship is destroyed during a rescue mission, the two crews must unite in an uneasy alliance and begin the journey home.
