Biography:

Arina's life, as long as it has been, has been one of sorrow and repression, the latter mostly of her own doing. She was only 4 when a failed attempt to prolong the lives of the population killed all the adults on her world. As a side effect of this outbreak of what Starfleet Medical designated "LPV-1", all the children of her world had their aging process slowed down drastically. However, when a child did hit puberty, they would die in the same horrible manner as their parents. Over time, Arina witnessed the horrible deaths of many of her friends. Many of the specific details she has purposely forgotten.

Things changed one fateful day in 2264 when the crew of the USS Enterprise came to her world and cured the virus. Though they would no longer die on reaching puberty like their parents, the retarded aging process remained.  It was at this point Arina first got an interest in medicine, one that would grow in later years. A couple years after the Enterprise came, Arina was one of several children of her planet that were taken back to Starfleet Medical to examine how the virus was still operating on the bodies of the Miran children. Glad to finally be off her torn world, Arina was delighted at the chance to go to Earth, though she knew that much poking and prodding awaited her.

She spent the next 30 years on Earth being studied and evaluated, aging barely a year in that time. It was during this time she acquired an interest in gardening. She thrived in the quiet peace of the garden as plants didn't ask her about her past.  Eventually she was adopted by a Vulcan Couple working at the facility  as they were the only people thought to be able to live as long as she would remain a child. Eventually her adoptive father, Selak, was posted to the USS Indus as Chief Medical Officer. Much favoured, he managed to get Arina a petty officers post as a medical technician aboard the Indus. The captain felt it odd to have a 8 year old girl serving on his ship, but her charming personality (which thankfully her Vulcan parents had not tried to suppress)  won the favour of most of his crew. Unfortunately, in 2312, the Indus was destroyed in a Tholian attack and Arina was one of the handful of survivors of the crew, her father having sacrificed himself to get her in an escape pod. After serving two more years on a civilian freighter with her Vulcan mother, they returned to Vulcan.

The next 40 years of her life was spent on Vulcan, which Arina found to be a dull and depressing place. In turn, she turned to research and study. She applied several times to Starfleet Academy, getting a perfect score on the entrance examination 3 times. However, each time the entrance committee turned her down citing her "youth". Eventually, a friend of her father's became Commandant and approved her entry as a personal favour. It was this same year that her adoptive mother died. Having much time to prepare, she had little trouble with the academic parts of the academy and soared through with only one less than perfect grade, which several of her instructors claimed was a deliberate attempt at a jealous officer to keep her from being valedictorian. She did manage to achieve that honour in medical school, during which she was again "adopted", this time by human parents.

Her Starfleet career was most interesting, though it started off dull being posted at Starfleet Medical. She was sent on a ship to aid the survivors of the Wolf 359 attack and was one of a dozen doctors that were awarded the McCoy cluster for their efforts. After Wolf 359 and the depletion of personnel in the First Fleet, she was given her first Starship assignment in over 50 years. During this time, she spent time on Bajor, and on the front lines of the Dominion War, where she was wounded twice, once during Operation Return and again at 2nd Chin'toka (where the Missouri was severely damaged). After the war, she was reassigned to a Starbase near her homeworld, which had changed much in the century she'd been away Eventually she grew bored of this too and requested a transfer back to a ship.

Personality Profile:

Though still youthful in appearance and attitude, Arina has a wealth of experiences ranging from tragic to joyous. She has seen much death, but it doesn't seem to phase her as she prefers to repress those sorts of things. Extreme stress can cause these buried feelings can come to the surface though and when they do she has been known to go almost catatonic. The war took a toll on her innocence and these days she is no longer the jovial child she once was but rather is quiet and withdrawn when she is not on duty. When she is on duty she has a warm and outgoing bedside manner, focused on her work while still caring about the psychological needs of her patients. She still longs for the peace of gardening, though oddly she has become quite the card shark being able to become nearly Vulcan at the table, having lived with them for a long time.
