Alun Pope

Alun Pope is The Statistics Consultant at the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority. Before that he was a Director of FARSTAR, a company that provides engineering advice, computer modelling and mathematical and statistical advice. He has previously worked at the University of London, the University of New South Wales, the Australian Bureau of Statistics and in the Australian Department of Defence as a research scientist and senior specialist engineer.

He was in the Department of Statistics at the University of Newcastle for eleven years, including a three-year period as Head of Department. He was a member and sometime Chair of the Expert Working Group of the International Range Safety Advisory Group, from 1993 to 1999.

He obtained the degrees of BSc (1971) and MSc (1973) in Mathematics from the University of Sydney, PhD (1982) in Mathematics from the University of London. He obtained an MSc in Statistics from the Australian National University in 1987. He has published in international journals in areas including time series, nonparametric regression and segmentation in image analysis; and the development of new modelling and simulation techniques to evaluate the safety of weapons firing ranges.

He has been a member of the NSW and Victorian Branch Councils of the Statistical Society of Australia, and was the Secretary of the NSW Branch in 1998 and 2003. He became an Accredited Statistician in 1999. He is also a member of the Australian Mathematical Society, Institute of Mathematical Statistics, Modelling and Simulation Society of Australia, and a Fellow of the Royal Statistical Society.
