The Rev. Sydney Warren Lavis came out to South Africa to be curate at St. Paul's Anglican Church, Bree Street Cape Town after having completed his studies at the St. Augustine Theological College, England, hence the name of the club. During a sermon on 11 August 1899, in part dealing with the "idle youth" of the time, Rev. Lavis suggested that a cricket club be started. Rev. Lavis and Church Councillor George Edward Witten got together 16 interested worshippers and on 3 September 1899 the inaugaral (founding) meeting of the club was held in the church. We prefer to say that St Paul's Church gave birth to St Augustine Cricket Club.

Rev. Lavis was the first President and held the position for 11 years. George Edward Witten was the club's first Secretary. The Rev. C. Earp-Jones succeeded Lavis as President. St Paul's controlled the club until 1941 after which it was handed over to club members serving on the Church Council. Rev. Lavis later became the BISHOP OF CAPE TOWN.

We regard Bishop Lavis and George Edward Witten as our FOUNDERS.
