Kingston & District Sea Cadet Corps

Our History

The story of "Steadfast" began in 1912, when the Unit was formed on board a brigantine moored at Kingston to 'train local boys of good  character in the ways of the Royal Navy and Mercantile Marine'.

Britain was then at the height of it's maritime power and the "Steadfast" founders were obviously aware of the advantages those

cadets who joined the Royal Navy and Mercantile Marine would have as a result of their training at Kingston.

In 1934, "Steadfast" acquired its Thames Side site from the Bentall family, who not only helped the Units original formation but have

remained closely associated ever since. Indeed Mr Edward  Bentall (great grandson of one of the founders) is the current chairman of the Units Management Committee.

The post war years saw "Steadfast" growing from strength to strength and in May 1952 Admiral of the Fleet Lord Fraser of North Cape opened a new block as a major extension to the existing Main Deck.

By now "Steadfast" was one of the foremost Sea Cadet Units in the

Country and the cadets and band had become a familiar part of the Kingston scene.

During 1995, it became apparent that the Main Deck building, which was now some 60 years old needed substantial sums of money spent on it, if it was to continue to be used. It was decided  therefore to use the value of the site which "Steadfast" owned to build a new purpose

designed headquarters. This was finally completed and handed over to the Unit in April 1998.
