AS THE TWIG IS BENT
I am one of a vast army of youth-The Order of DeMolay. I cannot presume to speak for that army, but in the confidence that many others share my views, I appeal to you, our respected leaders-members of the Masonic Fraternity.Three million young men have entered the portals of DeMolay, passed through its hallowed territory, and moved into the adult world- in almost every case better prepared to serve their fellow men. And as we travel the road of DeMolay, an organization potentially the world's greatest and most influential for youth training, achievement and service, we look to Masonry for inspiration, interest and understanding. In Washington ( and Indiana-A.J.S.) we have been granted one of the greatest gifts your Fraternity can bestow, the opportunity to meet in the atmosphere of sacred tradition of Masonry- the Temple. Yet, in the frankness of youth, we ask and expect more. We believe in our organization strongly enough to ask of the members of Freemasonry inspiration, guidance, and protection and cooperation. We look to every Mason to provide for us and the younger boys who will follow an example of uprightness and dedication to principles which will never show us a violation of those precious ideals on which both Orders are based. We urge you to offer guidance and leadership to Chapters of the Order of DeMolay. DeMolay needs qualified, dedicated adult leaders in unlimited numbers. In no Chapter of our organization do we now have enough. We plead for more Masonic advisors who show both a desire to serve DeMolay and the experience and temperament to work with our impressionable minds. In addition, we depend on Masonry for the extension of DeMolay. No DeMolay Chapter was ever started on DeMolay initiative alone, Masons must lay the groundwork , inspire a desire for membership in the youth of the community, and then maintain their own interest and attendance in the Chapter. DeMolay relies upon you for protection- protection from the devious paths down which our inexperience may lead us; protection through the strength of group opinion from influence which may be unwisely or unknowingly exerted upon us, and finally, protection of our inherent right to full democratic process in our own Chapters. The youthfulness of DeMolay asks co-operation with the maturity of Freemasonry. We ask an opportunity to help you in your service to mankind, and expect in return your support for our efforts to achieve the same goal. In practical terms, we suggest that every Lodge near a DeMolay Chapter have an active committee, preferably of revolving membership, to work with us to help us make the fullest use of our opportunities. And please remember; A Mason is always welcome at a Chapter meeting. Indeed, his attendance is needed. Optimistically, I declare this opinion held by young men of the Order of DeMolay. As our goals, dreams and activities are supported by strength of Masonic interest, DeMolay will continue to progress and ascend to new heights of service to mankind. -From the Masonic Tribune, Seattle, Washington.
