Disclaimer : If I owned pokémon, I’d *BE* rich rather than dreaming about it.  I don’t own pokémon or anything related to it.  However, I DO own any characters that I created (Which is everyone but Professor Oak in this chapter).

Chapter one: A New Beginning

“Ring!  Ring!  Ring!”  I awoke to the sound of the vidphone frantically ringing in my ear.  Throwing a housecoat around me, I hit the button to pick up, and was surprised to see Professor Oak’s face pressed up against the screen.

“Ed, help quick!  I was giving the snorlax it’s yearly exam, but it fell asleep… when it fell over, all the pokéballs near it fell, most of them opened…..  the tauros are loose!”  He yelled frantically.

“Ok, I’ll be there shortly” I grumbled, slapping the button again to turn it off.  Too early…  I don’t like to be woken up at 8:00 am in the morning, and the Professor knows it.  Oh well, maybe since I was helping him, he’d give me first pick… wait!  It was trainer’s day!  My friends and I were all 16 now, and we would get our first pokémon!  I rushed downstairs, and was almost out the door when my mom stopped me.

“Uh… honey?  Are you going to go over to the professor’s dressed like that?”  She asked.    Looking down at myself, I realized I was still in my housecoat, and ran upstairs to get changed.

“Thanks, bye mom!”  I yelled.

“Your hair?”

“What about it?  It’s fine!”  I said, and ruffling the oft–overlooked light brown mess up a bit.  “See?”  She just stared at me with that ‘Don’t even start’ look in her eyes.  “Oh, fine…”  I trudged back up the stairs.

“Now come get some breakfast before you go, you’re leaving too early.  The professor doesn’t expect you until ten.”  My mom ordered after I came back down.

“Mom, I don’t have time!  I’ll come back after I help the professor!”  I yelled at her.  “He has a zoo in his living room, I’ll eat after I help him get it taken care of!”

“Oh, sorry!”  She said, then got angry.  “Well, you should have told me!  Now get going!”

“Fine, I’ll see you soon!”  I said, and ran down the road.

“What took you so long!”  Professor Oak yelled at me, standing out on the lawn.

“My mom wouldn’t leave me alone.  So how does it look?”

“Not too good…  I managed to get the muk and snorlax into their pokéballs before the herd of tauros forced me out there.”  He replied, then handed me a large pouch.  “I need you to climb through the window, put all of the empty pokéballs in here, then get back here.”

“Great.  Fine, let’s do this.”  I said.  I started walking toward the lab.  I walked around to one of the side windows, and looked in at almost two dozen tauros huddled in the dining room, trying to get into the fridge.  “There must be some steak in there or something.” I thought to myself, as I hurried to the next room – the living room.  Coast clear.  Climbing through the window, I managed to rush into the lab area.  “Thank god that I am so much smaller than the professor”  I said, mostly to myself.  Professor oak could never have fit through such a small window.

I ran straight into the room, where I found tons of pokéballs scattered over the floor.  Gathering them into the small bag, I found myself thankful that pokéballs minimize themselves when not in use.  I turned to leave, but hound myself face to face with a very unhappy looking tauros.  Then the room filled with a purple light.

“Ok abra, now get us out of here!”   My best friend Josh said.  The world seemed to melt, twist, and change colors all at the same time, then I was back outside.  I turned to thank my friend – who ALWAYS wore his curly blonde hair in a massive afro-like mess, and nearly tripped over something very new – a small abra.

“Wow, you got an abra?  Way to go!  And thanks man, that was close!”  I said, still somewhat flustered by the quick trip I had just taken.  I had never been teleported before, and it was cool!

“Yeah man, my dad surprised me with it last night, seems he hit it big last time he went to celadon game corner.” Josh replied, grinning from ear to ear.

“Um, not to break this up, but can I have that bag Ed?  I kind of want to stop those tauros before they hurt themselves.”  The Professor interrupted.

“Sure, no problem.”  I said sheepishly, and handed him the bag full of balls.  He quickly identified what pokémon went in what ball and had the tauros put away faster than I would have thought possible.

“Well, now that that is taken care of and since you are already here, do you want your charmander?  I realize it’s a bit early, but there was no way I could have stopped those tauros without you.”

“Woah, are you serious?  It’s a little early, isn’t it?  But thanks a lot, professor!”  The moment the professor was handing me the pokéball, Matt and John burst in.

“Hey can we have our pokémon now too????”  They yelled in unison

“Well, I suppose that it’s not a problem, but what will I do with all this extra time?”  The professor wondered aloud.  He then went into the back room to get John and Matt’s pokémon.

“Did you guys come here this early JUST to get your pokémon?”  I asked.

“Of course, didn’t you?”

“No, I had to help professor Oak with something.  You guys have to learn some patience.”

“Here you are boys, your very first pokémon.  Bulbasaur for John, squirtle for Matt.  Take good care of them, or else!”  The professor warned, and cracked a big smile.  “Hey, why don’t you battle so that you can get to know your pokémon a little better?”

“Great idea professor, it’ll be great to give our pokémon a bit of time out of their pokéballs!”  Josh said.  Then he realized that abra hadn’t been in his pokéball for the last couple hours.  “Well, a chance for THEIR pokémon to be out of their pokéballs…”  he corrected himself.

“Yeah, how about all four of us?  Josh and I against Matt and John?”  I suggested.

“Sure, sounds good to me.”  Josh said.  “How about you two?”  Matt and John both thought it was a good idea, and we moved to be ready to battle.  Josh and I positioned ourselves on one side, while Matt and John were on the other.

I clicked the small button on the front of my pokéball, and it enlarged in my hand.  I was shaking with anticipation as I threw my pokéball onto the ground  “Charmander, go!!”  I yelled enthusiastically.  The white light emerged from the ball and formed itself into my very first pokémon.

“Char char!”  It declared.  It seemed very ready to battle, and happy to be out of the pokéball.

“Bulbasaur, go!”  John yelled.  His small bulb pokémon was eager to battle.

“Squirtle, go.”  Matt said, seemingly unsure of himself.  He even seemed surprised when the tiny turtle pokémon appeared.

“Squirtle?”  It asked.

“What?  No it’s not that I don’t like you, you’re great.  I’m just not used to having a pokémon.”

“Squirtle.  Squirtle!”  It said, gesturing to the battlefield (the lab’s front lawn).

“Yeah, let’s go!”  Matt said, somewhat more excited than before.  “Hit charmander with water gun!”

“Bulbasaur, vine whip the abra!”  John commanded.

“Damn!  Charmander, dodge then ember on bulbasaur!”  I yelled frantically.

“Abra…  Um… teleport!”  Josh said.  Charmander was hit a little by the water gun, but was able to hang on.    Abra turned blue and disappeared just before bulbasaur’s vines hit it, and bulbasaur was left wide open.  Charmander scrambled in next to bulbasaur, and began to wave its tail flame around to spray embers on bulbasaur.  Bulbasaur screamed in pain as it was hit with the red-hot cinders.  John  immediately recalled it.

As charmander turned to deal with squirtle, it was hit between the eyes with a water gun!  Thrown back, charmander lay on its back in defeat.

“Damn.  Charmander, return.”  I called.  The beam of red light shot from the pokéball to charmander, and it was sucked up.  “Nice try bud.”  I said to the pokéball.

“Squirtle, tackle that abra!”  Several times, squirtle attempted to ram abra.  Every time it failed as abra flashed blue and teleported several feet away.  “Dammit!  Keep trying squirtle!”

After a minute of squirtle chasing abra around, abra began to breath heavy.  “You ok bud?”  Josh asked worriedly.  Abra turned and gave josh a thumbs–up, and was hit from behind by a tackle!

“Water gun NOW!”  Matt commanded.  Abra squealed as it was pounded into the ground by the stream of water.

“Hey, no fair!  He wasn’t looking!”  Josh yelled, running to pick up his abra.

“Ab bara” Abra croaked, and josh knew that it would be just fine.

“Come on, buddy.  Back in the ball.”  The ruby red laser shot out of the pokéball and sucked abra quickly inside.

“That didn’t last long.”  Professor Oak laughed.  We had just had him heal our pokémon, and were trying to decide how to go about our journeys.  Matt and John wanted to head to the south of pallet, while I wanted to go the same route as Pokémon League Champion Ash Ketchum had taken years ago.  So we went our separate ways, but Professor Oak called Josh back.  “Here, you would have gotten a starting pokémon but since you already have one, I’ll give u this.”  He said, and handed Josh something that looked like a small pill.

“Professor!  Why are you trying to give me drugs?”  Josh asked.  The professor chuckled.

“It’s not drugs, it’s a TM.  Let abra hold it.” He explained.  Abra took the pill reluctantly, but when he did it glowed blue, and disappeared!

“What TM was that?”  I asked, amazed.

“One that should suit abra nicely.  It’s a move called psywave.  It’s a little weak, but it’s a good starting move for psychics.”

“Thanks, professor!  I appreciate this!”  Josh yelled, overjoyed by the fact that his abra could battle now.

“HAH!  Josh, those TMs are a dime a dozen.  But I guess since you needed it, u should show SOME gratitude…  just chill it out a bit ok?”  I laughed at Josh.  He calmed down a little bit, and after saying our goodbyes, and taking a quick stop at my house for some food, we set off on the very first journey of our lives.
