Chapter Two : Prepare for
Trouble
It is an uneventful trip through the grass to viridian, a few battles with pidgey and the like and we are there. I decide that I want to battle the gym leader while we’re here.
“What, are you CRAZY?” Josh screams at me. “Gary Oak is one of the most powerful trainers known, he battled Ash Ketchum for the title of Pokémon League Champion years ago, and he’s sure to be stronger now!”
“Hmm……. You have a point. We’ll come back, and get the earth badge later.” I decide. “In the meantime, we should go train. What do you think?”
“I think that’s the first thing you’ve said all day that makes sense.” Josh replies, smiling.
After a hearty lunch, we decide to go to the viridian forest. For a while, we alternate the battles, easily defeating the many weedle, caterpie, and the odd spearow. Then we saw something that made us stop dead in our tracks.
“Josh, you seeing what I’m seeing?” I whispered in awe.
“If what you’re seeing is the easiest experience we’ve seen all day, I sure am.” He whispered back. We had inadvertently stumbled upon an entire nest of weedle. Charmander and Abra made short work of them, fully enjoying their type advantages until a half dozen aimed, and covered abra in string shot.
“AGH! Do something!” Josh yelled in surprise, as the weedle launched themselves headfirst at abra in poison sting attacks. I couldn’t help but laugh as abra teleported out of the sting shot cast, and the weedle became entangled in their own attack.
“Charmander, finish them with ember.” I instructed, and charmander was more than happy to oblige. The weedle were easily defeated.
“That was interesting. I should study this behavior…” Josh said, trying to sound like a professional.
“It’s a wonder that they don’t evolve yet!” I declared, grinning.
“You know as well as I do that it’s too early for them to do that. It’ll take till tomorrow, at least.” Josh countered, laughing.
“So, you think you’re skilled because you defeated a bunch of weedle? You two are pitiful.” Came a voice from beyond a tree. The figure of a man slowly stepped into the light. From the look of him, he was around 18 years old, and his shoulder length black hair, dark clothes and trench coat gave him a very intimidating look. “I’ll show you skill. Houndour, attack.” He said calmly, his hard, piercing eyes never leaving ours.
Charmander and abra turned around as the new pokémon let out a low howl. “Abra, psywave!” Josh commanded. Abra released a wave of psychic energy, which dissipated as it got near to the small dog.
“What the….?” I wondered aloud. “Charmander, leer then scratch!” Charmander’s eyes momentarily caught houndour’s, and houndour began to sway. It was quickly brought back to the real world when charmander ran up and left welts across it’s side with it’s claws.
“Houndour, bite.” This new opponent commanded softly. The houndour quickly sank it’s teeth into charmander’s side and began to gnaw.
“Abra, teleport around it and confuse it!” Josh commanded quickly.
“Houndour catch it with faint attack.” The two foot tall dog pokémon disappeared for a moment, then abra went flying, out cold. Josh recalled it.
“Charmander, ember!” I yelled in desperation. The flames barely made houndour blink.
“Tackle.” The man said simply. Charmander was knocked back to me. “Normally I would steal your pokémon, but they simply aren’t worth the time to train. My name is Geoff, remember it. When I become famous, you can take pride that you fought me.” With that, Geoff disappeared back into the dark of the trees.
“Well, that was humbling.” I said, clipping charmander’s pokéball back onto my belt.
“Indeed. Come on, we need to go back to the viridian pokémon center.” Luckily, we were not attacked on the way back, and made it to the pokémon center safely.
At the pokémon center, Josh and I begin to tell Nurse Joy what had happened. “He attacked us!”
“Abra couldn’t hurt his pokémon!”
“Charmander tried, but couldn’t do it either!”
“Boys, boys, calm down. You’ll be safe here. Why don’t you let me heal up your pokémon for you?” She took our pokéballs and a chansey ran them off to be healed and energized. We watched it take our pokéballs away, then our attention was quickly drawn to the door as someone burst through it.
“Quick, nurse, heal my espeon!” the young lady cried, pushing a pokéball into the nurse’s hands. Her dark shoulder length hair was messed up, and her eyes were open wide, seemingly with fear.
“Hey, what happened?” I asked, laying a hand on her shoulder. She immediately jerked away from me as though I were the devil himself.
“Ed, give her room.” Josh said quietly. I took this advice, and she seemed to calm down a little. “Now, what happened?” He asked.
“She… attacked me… her umbreon beat up my espeon, and.. and.. she would have killed me!” This girl burst into tears, and Josh led her to a room in the back of the pokémon centre, so she could rest while her espeon was taken care of.
