Amnesty International Group at HHS

Maybe you've heard of it but do you really know what Amnesty International is all about? If you'd like some info, check out the address below, and click on "About Amnesty".

In our school we have a team of letter writers. We meet every Thursday in the Art room or the Humphrey room at 12:15 to help people that have had their fundamental human rights violated. Our primary focus has been the release of prisoners of conscience ("people detained anywhere for their beliefs or because of their ethnic origin, sex, colour, language, national or social origin, economic status, birth, or other status, provided they have not used or advocated violence" -amnesty.ca). We also write to "ensure fair and prompt trials for political prisoners, abolish the death penalty, torture, and other cruel treatment of prisoners, and end political killings and “disappearances”." - amnesty.ca/about/index.html. We send letters to other countries, specified in the Action File of that week. I think the reason most people join the group is because they get a sense of making a difference in the world. To put that into perspective, our letter coud be the one that convinces a leader to release a prisoner of conscience or reunite members of a family separated by war or unlawful treatment.

Do you want to know how you can join our team, and change the life of someone who needs you help and compassion? If so, talk to Mr. Murphy, Jen Sirois or Cindy Hawthorne for more information. You can see them in the Art room or Humphrey room on Thursdays at 12:15 or around the school during the week.

You may know some of the other dedicated writers... click here ...they can inform you too.
