Huskies Football
Season Summary
HOME
After getting off to a rocky start this season
(losing their first game 35-13 to Saint John High), they managed
to pull off a comeback, that can only be described as amazing. They
were determined to prove they were the better team after losing that
first game. And they did.
After losing to Saint John High, they went on to
be undefeated for the rest of their long season. They defeated St.
Stephen 14-0 and Harbour View 45-0. Then came the biggest game any of
them had ever played....the KV game.
They went to the KV field as the
underdogs. The odds were against them, as were the some 150
people there to watch the KV Crusaders have their home coming
game. After KV scored 2 quick touchdowns, the KV crowd was
ecstatic. But the Huskies and their devoted fans held their heads
high, as they knew those would be the only touchdowns that
KV would get. They were right. They went on to win it
45-14, scoring 7 unanswered touchdowns, with Craig Manzer, Jack
Breen, Kyle Legassick, Josh Blizzard, Curtis Kyle with 2, Adrian
Basque with an amazin 115 yd Defensive touchdown, and Dan Travis
scoring 2 points by putting his kick offs through the end zone.
After KV, the Huskies went on to defeat St. Mac's
38-6, and Bernice MacNaughton 25-23, with a last minute (literally)
touchdown pass from Billy Carter to Craig Manzer. This put
Hampton in second place, with SJH having the same record (5-1), and
they got to host a playoff game for the first time ever.
This was their second bout with KV. And yet again,
we defeated them, with a score of 21-6, with the touchdowns beign
scored by Craig Manzer, Dan Anger and Jack Breen. This settled
it. Hampton was in the fianls, against the only team to beat
them...the Saint John High Greyhounds.
Everyone said SJH was going to beat us. Boy
did we prove them wrong. It was a great game towatch, even though
Hampton went into the locker rooms at half trailing 13-7, with that
touchdown being scored by Dan Anger. It was also his emotonal speech
at half that brought the team together, to come back out with renewed
intent and heart, and to return to the field with their heads held
high. The third quarter saw both teams going scoreless, but early in
the fourth, Saint John High scored again. This made it 19-7. The
600+ fans there thoguht SJH had it in the bag.But the Hampton fans
didn't give up hope, and kept singing and cheering, and Mr. Currie
kept playing his trumpet. Then it happened. We scored again. Dan
Anger caught a 14 yard pass from Billy Carter, and scored his second
touchdown of the game. The score was 19-14 for SJH.It was back in
reach, and the Huskeis knew it. A few minutes later, Kyle Legassick
kicked a 40 yard punt through the end zone which scored a single
point.19-15 now. Then the Huskies got the ball back, and took it to
the 1 1/2 yard line. Jack Breen punched through for the third
(and eventually game winning) touchdown. This convert missed, but the
score was still 21-19 for us, and would remain so until the end of
the game (about 30 seconds or so).
After the game, we were presented with our
2001-2002 "AA" Provincial Champion patches and the Mike Upward
Trophy, a.k.a. the AA Provincial Champ Trophy. And now Hampton
High School has it's name on the trophy... and it won't be the last
time.
