The Jeremiad is a form of rhetoric primarily used as a form of “powerful motivation for work.” (Klumpp)  The Jeremiad “refers to a sermon or another work that accounts for the misfortunes of an era as a just penalty for great social and moral evils, but holds out hope for changes that will bring a happier future.” (Jeremiads and Conversion Narratives)  The Jeremiad borrowed from the Biblical Jeremiah found in the Old Testament.  The Puritans see their lives mission as fulfilling God’s plan and hardships along the way are tests from God.  The Jeremiad addresses these hardships and motivates the community to fix the problems.
