The episode begins right where 'The Cobra Strikes' left off - Impus's giant red coccoon is flying around Mariner Bay, causing destruction and mayhem. Ryan leaves to help some injured construction workers, and the teens follow the coccoon into a container yard, where they morph and shoot the coccoon down. As Vypra, Loki and Jinxer watch, the coccoon crashes to the ground, the entire container yard erupting into flames, but a tall red figure soon emerges - it's Olympius, with Diabolico's red star on his chest. Carter takes the demon on, but is knocked down repeatedly before being blasted away. V-Lancer shots bouncing harmlessly off the demon, Olympius charges the other four Rangers, capturing them within his star. He turns to Carter, but the star power begins to take its toll on Olympius, and Jinxer hurries over and teleports him back to the Skull Cavern. Ryan arrives, and helping Carter to his feet, they head back to the Aquabase.
In the Skull Cavern, a weakened Olympius tells the demons his plan, to use the captured Rangers to infiltrate the Aquabase, and although Loki is very skeptical, Olympius morphs into each of the Rangers, becoming "Chad". Back at Lightspeed, Ryan is telling Captain Mitchell about Olympius, how he is only going to get more powerful because of the star power, when "Chad's" signal is picked up in the city, and Carter rushes out to find him. "Chad" tells Carter that he can't remember what happened, the others aren't with him, and that they should return to the Aquabase. Carter agrees. Once inside the Aquabase, "Chad" calls up Vypra, telling her to take an army to the tunnel entrance, but not before his odd behaviour attracts Carter's attention.
Hearing Captain Mitchell organising a search party for the missing Rangers, Olympius realises he needs to keep the entrance to the Aquabase clear, and morphs into "Kelsey". Rushing out, "Kelsey" tells the Captain that everyone is back, safe and sound, and they can call off the search party. Agreeing, the Captain walks away, but Carter wonders how "Kelsey" had known about the search party. In the control room, "Kelsey" tries to access Lightspeed's computer systems, but can't because she doesn't have a pass key. Olympius sneaks into Mitchell's office, finding a pass key, and morphs into "Dana" when Mitchell enters. "Dana" tells her father that she is okay, before heading out to the Transport Bay and morphing into "Joel".
As "Joel" enters and walks towards a console, telling Ms Fairweather to leave him alone (you’d think this alone would have tipped everyone off), Vypra leads an army of batlings to the Aquabase’s tunnel entrance. "Joel" manages to open the entry gate, but in the control room, Ryan and Carter catch sight of the demons about to enter the tunnel, and Carter screams for Ms F to close the entry gate. Ms Fairweather hits the "Emergency Close" button, wrestles with Joel and manages to throw the pass key away. Carter arrives, but "Joel" morphs back into Olympius, grabbing Ms F and threatening her, demanding the pass key back. Just as Carter hands the key over, Ryan arrives onto the scene, dramatically rescuing Ms F as Carter wrestles Olympius away, grabbing him and throwing him into the pool, where the demon appears to be electrocuted.
Both Carter and Olympius wash up on the beach. With Olympius seriously weakened, the other four Rangers escape. Vypra, Loki and Jinxer arrive, and as Jinxer helps Olympius teleport away, Vypra leaves a monster to finish the Rangers. Carter morphs, and armed with his Battle Booster, knocks the monster down, before a V-Lancer Spectral Blast destroys it. Jinxer enlarges the monster with a growth card, and the Rangers bring out the Lightspeed Megazord, as Ryan pilots the Max Solarzord into battle. The Solarzord kicks the monster around for a while, before the team forms the Lightspeed Solarzord, destroying the monster with full fire-power. Back in the Skull Cavern, Loki and Vypra are not at all impressed with Olympius. In the Aquabase, the teens play a trick on Carter, pretending to be mad at him for bringing the demon into the base, and gleefully end up dunking him in the pool.
Well, the second half of 'Power Rangers Lightspeed Rescue' certainly started with a bang. We pick up right where we left off, hours after the death of Diabolico, and Olympius is the new badguy on the block. His powers seem impressive enough and he's certainly one tough demon, absorbing those V-Lancer blasts from point blank range. I liked his idea too, but you have to wonder why none of the other demons thought of infiltrating the Aquabase from the inside out. Hey, it didn't exactly work, but it was a start. Interestingly enough, Vypra and Loki were both very condescending to Olympius at the close of the episode, perhaps still fiercely loyal to Diabolico, while Jinxer's loyalties appear to be only towards Olympius. I wonder how that will play out in the future...
Watch at the beginning of the episode for Ryan's quick exit from action to save the trapped construction workers. I have a funny feeling we'll be seeing more and more creative ways to remove Ryan from battle so that they can switch to sentai footage from here on in. And one thing they could have improved on - who wouldn't have paid money to see a Carter vs Joel fight in the Aquabase? Or better yet, Ms Fairweather beating up Joel? Man, they set it up so well, and Olympius had to morph back into his normal form. D'oh!
My only other complaint for this episode revolved around, oddly enough, the zord battle. It was a good zord battle, but not great, and could have used a lot more actual fighting as opposed to the long transformation sequence. We're coming dangerously close to repeating the standard 'ten second zord fight' which PRLG patented, so let's hope it doesn’t continue, particularly with such cool zords. Finally, that scene at the end where the teens played that trick on Carter - I thought they were all really mean to him, joke or not, and thought they were serious!
Yep, this one goes to Kelsey, when she confronted Carter with the other Rangers in the final scene, for her line, "Are you saying you couldn’t tell me from a huge ugly monster?" Well Kelsey, if we close our eyes and squint a bit, maybe...
