Late one night, a young boy named Simon is showing off all his inventions to Joel, in particularly, a powerful telescope which he built himself. In the Skull Cavern, Olympius shows his mother a giant, spiky asteroid in space, heading straight towards Mariner Bay, telling her it will completely obliterate the city. Back at Simon's house, Joel leaves, and trying out his telescope, Simon suddenly sees the asteroid. The next day at Lightspeed, Ms Fairweather is telling the team about how they'll be able to operate the Solarzord without Ryan using their battle boosters. As Ms Fairweather begins telling them about the new Omega Megazord, Joel enters (late) with a bouquet of flowers, and tries unsuccessfully to give them to her.
Just then, Simon hacks into the Rescue Morpher's frequency in an effort to reach Joel, and walking over, Captain Mitchell is clearly unimpressed. Joel says that it won't happen again, gives him the flowers, and heads off in the Rescue Rover. Finding Simon, Joel is angry with him, but Simon tells him about the asteroid, and Joel agrees that they need to tell Lightspeed. Taking Simon into the Aquabase, Joel tries to make Ms Fairweather listen to him, but she is busy running some important tests. After much fuss, the pair finally alert Ms Fairweather to the situation, Simon finding satellite footage of the asteroid and getting a kiss on the cheek for his efforts, much to Joel's chagrin.
The alarm sounds, Joel joins the other Rangers and they morph and head into the train bay. The Lightspeed Solarzord touches down in Mariner Bay, and the Rangers use the sun to charge the zord's lasers. Taking aim, the Solarzord begins firing into the sky, and blasts away at the incoming asteroid. Prompted by Bansheera, Olympius teleports into the city, and puts up a forcefield blocking out the sun and cutting the zord's power supply. The Rangers leap out of the Solarzord and fight Olympius with their battle boosters. However, with time running out, they are soon called back by Ms Fairweather, who tells them that it's time to initiate the Omega Project.
The demons happily watch the incoming asteroid, Bansheera telling them that, if this works, Olympius will be her second-in-command. Back at Lightspeed, the Omega zords are transported into the Rail Rescues, and sink below the Train Bay before being flipped vertical. As Captain Mitchell, Ms Fairweather and Simon watch from Rescue Ops, the Max Solarzord lifts off, pulling the Super Train behind it, and head into outer space. Once they near the asteroid, the Omega zords emerge from the Rail Rescues, and forming a walking-vehicle (The Omega Crawler) the Rangers land on the asteroid. They drill a hole in the asteroid's surface with one of the zord's drill arms, and insert the first explosive. Flying low over the surface, they find the second location, and bury the second explosive. Just as they are about to leave, Bansheera appears and the asteroid comes to life, pinacles of rock grabbing the zord and holding it down.
Back at Lightspeed, everyone watches helplessly. Needing a power-boost, the Rangers form the Omega Megazord, and the rock shards all snap and break off as the zord stands up. The Megazord jabs its lance down into the asteroid, sending a pulse through the rock which causes both explosives to detonate - colossal fireballs consume the asteroid, and the entire asteroid is destroyed in an earth-shattering explosion. Watching down below, Simon, the Captain and Ms F initially believe that the Rangers were killed in the explosion, but the Solarzord soon emerges from the cloud of debris, hauling the Super Train home, with all the Rangers safe and sound.
Back home, the Rangers enter the Aquabase and are congratulated for their efforts. Joel tries to get Simon to ask out Ms Fairweather for him, but Simon is the one Ms Fairweather agrees to go on a date with, and the two of them head out as Joel watches in disbelief.
Well folks, I just finished watching the movie Armageddon... no wait, it was an episode of Power Rangers in Space! No, it was a Power Rangers Lost Galaxy episode...oy, I’m so confused. First and foremost, it was a great episode, not excellent but not too shabby either. But we had the Rangers taking their zords into space to stop an asteroid, a whole new Megazord, and yet another cute kid. Oh, and when Bansheera began talking about her choices for her second-in-command, I was sure that Deviot or Darkonda would suddenly show up and object.
At any rate, while good, I have one major complaint about the episode - it was far too rushed. It felt like they tried to cram far too much action into the one episode. And it also felt like they were only showing every second scene, and letting the audience fill in the blanks. Fault lines on the asteroid? Drill arms? Bombs? Detonating the explosives with a timer? Was I the only one who was left scratching his head? It would have been far more interesting if they'd expanded this episode out into a two-parter, but then it would have been a carbon copy of Dark Spectre's Revenge...
And finally, what is it with Power Rangers and child geniuses? We had Billy, then Justin, and now Simon. That Californian education system sure is impressive. Finally, if the teens all gather around and laugh at Joel's failed attempts to ask out Ms F one more time, I'm gonna smack every single one of them. Give the guy a break, kids, he's trying his best! But all in all - I loved the Omega Megazord - that is one cool looking zord - which instantly wins this episode extra points. Not to mention the mammoth explosion which wiped out the asteroid. Here's hoping we see the Omega Megazord a lot more often.
As annoying as Simon was, I just have to award him with the Line of the Episode, for "I know you think I’m just a kid, but I’m a smart kid." Self-promotion kid, use it well.
And while we're on the subject of lines, did anyone else catch Olympius refering to the Lightspeed Solarzoid?
