Episode No. 824 - As Time Runs Out

Synopsis

Queen Bansheera summons Jinxer, and asks him to fetch Vypra and Loki, saying that she's going to make them her second-in-commands, as Olympius has failed her too many times. Listening to the conversation, Olympius acts first, and soon meets up with the two demons in the city. Olympius holds out his hands as a measure of truce between the three, and although initially suspicious, both Loki and Vypra drop their weapons and shake hands - and then, vines shoot up from beneath them, and drag them underground. Olympius reports back to the Skull Cavern, and tells his mother than the Rangers destroyed Vypra and Loki, before promising vengence. Meanwhile, the Rangers have arrived in the Rescue Rover, investigating the disturbance, only to find a green monster hand sticking out of the ground. Suddenly, vines from the hand reach up and wrap around each of the Ranger's wrists, rendering their morphers useless.

The monster Vilevine appears from the hand. He tells the Rangers that, at noon, the vines around their wrists will release millions of tiny, toxic spores that will destroy Mariner Bay, and the residents of the city will have the Rangers to thank for it. He teleports away, and the Rangers worriedly return to the Aquabase. Vilevine reports to Olympius, and tells him that everything is going to plan. It's 11:40. In the Aquabase, Ms Fairweather uses a laser to try and burn the vines off, testing it out on Carter, but it doesn't work. Upon more testing, they find that the spores are too small to be contained. Joel tries to cut the vines off with a pair of pliers, but it doesn't work either. Captain Mitchell then enters, telling them that a Science Lab on the East Side of Mariner Bay has a poison that should destroy the seed-pods, and they're going to meet the Rangers mid-way. The Rangers head for the Rover.

Meanwhile, while all this action is taking place, Vypra and Loki climb up from under the ground in a very familiar desert. It seems they survived, and setting off, both demons begin plotting how to get revenge on Olympius.

The time is 11:56, and the Rangers meet the scientists in an empty carpark in the city, but just as the scientists hand over the poison, Vilevine appears, destroying it, and teleports away. The Rangers are quite depressed, but suddenly Carter has an idea, and calls for the Max Solarzord, the zord leaving it's hanger and touching down in the city seconds later. As the Rangers climb onboard and strap themselves in, Carter explains to Mitchell that the spores can't hurt anyone in outer space. The zord leaves the Earth's atmosphere, and the clock hits 12:00, the pods opening and releasing their spores. The Rangers open the shuttle's door, and the spores (and Joel's hat) are all sucked out into space. Kelsey's seatbelt comes loose, and the Rangers almost lose her, but grab her in the nick of time, saving her. Once all the spores have been ejected into outer space, the door slams shut. The pods fall to the ground and vapourise, and weapons from the zord destroy the spores floating in space.

Back in Mariner Bay, Vilevine and a troop of batlings are running loose, but the Solarzord flies back down, and the Rangers triumphantly arrive, confronting the demons. They all morph, and the butt-kicking begins. Joel takes on batlings with his battle booster, Chad and Dana begin blasting, Kelsey uses her V-Lancer, while Carter fights the monster. Eventually, all the Rangers team-up against Vilevine, and destroy him with their V-Lancers. It wasn't enough - Jinxer uses a card to reanimate the monster and make him grow, and the Rangers summon the Omega Megazord. Despite Olympius's now famous 'sky-darkening' technique, the Rangers easily fight the monster and destroy him once and for all.

Meanwhile, Vypra and Loki have found the tomb where they were originally imprisoned. Climbing down into it, Vypra reads an inscription on the wall as Loki lowers a coil of rope into the vault - and who else but Diabolico emerges! Vypra and Loki quickly fill in Diabolico about Impus’s transformation into Olympius using his star power and their betrayal at his hands, and Diabolico promises to help them destroy Olympius, before they all teleport away. However, they were not alone - Ryan was there, secretly witnessing the entire ceremony.

Commentary

Yep, another great episode from 'Power Rangers Lightspeed Rescue', ladies and gentlemen. A race against the clock, a diabolical (no pun intended) plan, some awesome heroics, one of the best fight scenes we've seen yet (and that's saying a lot), plus, some major surprises. It wasn't really surprising that Olympius would eventually double-cross Vypra and Loki, but it was shocking how coldly Bansheera treated her own son, and as for the return of Diabolico - whoa. Complete surprise. And we thought things were strained between the villains before. I can't wait to see how Loki and Vypra explain their absense to the queen, and Olympius's reaction to their presense should be worth it.

Of note was the darn cool batling fight - it was awesome seeing the different Rangers all using their various weapons, particularly during the defeat of Vilevine. And after the Rangers had successfully disposed of the spores, it was funny to see Ms Fairweather joyfully hug Captain Mitchell, only to respectfully bounce off him and smile demurely. We even got in a nifty little zord battle - can't complain there. But I do have a question - why is poor Carter always the test subject? One of these days they’re gonna fry the guy...

Things to Look Out For

Best Line of the Episode

A few lines in this episode, while not outrightly hilarious, were quite funny. The first was Olympius's instruction to Jinxer after Vilevine was destroyed the first time - "Jinxer, don't just stand there, put him back together!" I'm not sure why, but I found this hugely funny. And secondly, Loki's response to Vypra telling him that she'd seen the ruins before - "So what are you gonna do, give me a tour?" Again, this probably wasn't all that funny, but darn tootin', it's my episode guide.

And I just have to mention Olympius's line to Bansheera after swearing vengence for Vypra and Loki's deathes - "No-one destroys demons and gets away with it." I bet Olympius will be remembering that in the days to come.
