Bonnie Tyler

Faster than the Speed of Night

I'm not crazy about Bonnie's voice but sometimes I really like the way she sings. There's two Steinman songs on this album. Total Eclipse of the Heart is a masterpiece. Actually it's a little wonder that it was such a big hit because it's not a simple song at all. Faster than the Speed of Night is the one and only Steinman song that makes me feel almost nothing. There's also some wild choices for cover versions on this album. Have You Ever Seen the Rain may be even better than the original CCR version.

Bonnie Tyler

Secret Dreams and
Forbidden Fire

Some of this album is quite boring. I never listen to the complete album, just some songs. And I don't like some arrangements. Ravishing is almost a masterpiece, and in my opinion Bonnie’s best vocal performance. Loving You is quite good too. Rebel Without a Clue used to be one of my least favorite steinsongs. I still think some parts of it don’t work very well but I’ve started to like it better. Holding Out for a Hero is a song that I sometimes love and sometimes can't stand. The piano and background vocal riffs are very energetic. The lyrics are very silly and quite funny. The drum machine sounds like a typewriter. The non-Steinman songs are a bit boring, the best is Band of Gold. Anyway, Secret Dreams and Forbidden Fire is peobably my favorite album title.

Free Spirit

I used to prefer the Air Supply version of Making Love but one day it happened to me. I was listening to Bonnie's version and realized that it's one of the best things Jim Steinman has ever done. The way it starts with just the opera sample and piano, and then grows into something huge. The disco version of 2/3 isn’t bad, just quite useless.
