First Reflection

Searching information on Internet is of increasing importance in the Information Age. Internet is a giant library, or a huge database, ready for us to search for. But due to the information explosion on Internet, I get lost sometimes. For instance, I want to know about the ingredients and procedure of some typical Singaporean food. Chances are that I may end up with bunches of information on luxuriant restaurants and big supermarkets, totally irrelevant to what I aim at.

So how to develop tragedy to search for information on the web about a chosen topic? Bookmarking is a useful means of developing learning resources as well as a key search technique.

For example, I want to know about Singaporean food, so I open the website of “yahoo.com.sg”, type “food” in the column of search, then get 4895 items on “all of Yahoo” search, which makes me dumbfounded. To narrow search item, I select “Singapore only”, then let go the search. Search result finds 7 categories and 343 items. I tried “food” with quotation mark. Search result finds 6 categories and 330 items. I click “ Singapore food and recipes” and find a dozen of typical Singapore food which I’m eager to know. Here am I. From this, I get the reflections as following:

1.    using specific but distinctive words

2.    most important word first

3.    exclude irrelevant associations or connections

4.    use wildcards to get variations on a word

In order to save time for later convenience, I add this site to bookmarks/favorites.

1.    click the ‘favorites file on the Explorer browser menu and the ‘add’

2.    create bookmark folders—open’organise’to create new ‘folders’

3.    fill new bookmarks in folders.

4.    open ‘organise’ to rename or delete it if not desirable.

To enrich it, I browse singseek.com; hotbot.com;altavista.com to add 3 or 4 good sites to my bookmark. Now I have a set of useful links for my topic. Thanks to bookmark, I can get access to my favorite sites efficiently and effectively.

Next, saving my bookmark file as a ‘web resource’ site is more demanding and fruitful as well.

1.    construct frontpage in program

2.    create new folder on the desktop

3.    export bookmark from file to new folder

4.    transfer bookmark from new folder to frontpage(hyperlink)

What I can do now is to email my friends to visit my website and share with me the beautiful Singaporean food.
