Subject: A period of growth Date: Fri, 11 Aug 2000 12:35:08 -0600 From: john cox To: info@fofriends.www.50megs.com Hello Stella: You will probably not remember me; joined (FOF) in the Los Angeles center in the mid-70's, stayed for approx. 2-1/2 years. Perhaps as i did not join at the beginning it was obvious to me that the possibility of FOF developing into a cult was quite strong. It was also obvious that there was much to be learned there, and remarkable people to share and learn with. In that period of time many indications of Cult like thinking and behavior manifested. Such as no questioning of what Robert said, the dearth of humor, increases of required donations, the sham use of Alchemy to justify and encourage the attainment of 'worldly' possessions and practices, etc. For me personally the deciding factors in my leaving included Robert arranging marriages and the School's fascination with wealth. Combined with increasing pressure to have no (or as little as possible) contact with those not of the Teaching, it was obvious that students would soon be in a position of no independent thought or responsibility for their own spirituality or behavior. It must also be admitted that i assumed a position as a rebel. Upon discovery that others were looking to me for opinions on the directions being taken within the Fellowship; there was not the strength within me to be responsible for others. Questions as to what became of FOF and the members have arisen often over the years. There is sorrow here that my fears were apparently realized. I appreciate you having initiated and carried through with the website and making communication available. If others are interested, my name and E-mail address can be released or given out as appropriate. This can be posted if you wish, the friendships and wisdom given during my time have a prime spot in my heart. In Respect,
John Cox |
