As a good hunter, you must respect the game and balance what you take against the available supply and your own needs. Make sure that you bring with you your hunting permit, official hunting licence, firearms certificate and, if appropriate, any relevant import documentation. You are required to produce these documents on request for inspection by wardens.
Show respect for others The area where you hunt is also the workplace of the reindeer herders and the grazing area for the reindeer. When the mountains are covered in green, the reindeer build up their reserves for the rest of the year. The start of the hunting season also coincides with one of the most intensive periods during the reindeer husbandry year, which culminates in the selective slaughtering of the bulls, usually in the first half of September.
Elkhunting The first Monday in September also marks the start of the elkhunting season in areas that are also designated for small game hunting. Neither form of hunting takes precedence over the other. This means that the onus is on you, as a hunter of small game, to find out whether there is any elk hunting in the area where you intend to hunt.
Safety first! Never walk with the safety catch of your gun off. Break your gun as you approach another person. Make sure that there are no people or dogs in the line of fire. It is up to you to know what species are in season. Only Class 3 and 4 guns may be used for hunting ptarmigan in the winter. For your own safety, you should wear some form of conspicuous marking if you go out hunting on land where elk hunting is taking place at the same time. All the major river valleys have large areas of private land. Whenever you are not travelling on public roads, you must have the landowners permission to cross his land with hunting weapons. Remember that dogs must be kept on a leash.
Keep the countryside tidy The Right of Public Access allows you to pitch a tent or spend the night in the open air for a day or two almost anywhere. However, you cannot set up a campsite or a hunting camp without the permission of the landowner. You must not break off twigs or branches, strip the bark, or cut down growing trees. Take your rubbish with you, and take care to cover all visible traces of your visit.
