Fame comes with a price, and that is usually in the forms of gossip and paparazzi...and newspapers making the most of any opportunity to make innocent decisions sound bad. Unfortunately, stellar* have received some recent bad publicity from "Sunday News" over their decision not to play at the Big Day Out 2000. The truth of the article (what I have seen of it as was published on stellar* HPF have the situation correct but they make stellar* sound bad...whereas the band was merely standing up for themselves and refusing to be second best. That is the kind of attitude that have made stellar* a success. So what is the real deal? What do stellar* have to say about it? The facts are right here...
STELLAR SULKS OVER BIG DAY OUT
THE Big Day Out rocked 45,000 fans but there was no Stellar performance. Kiwi band stellar*, fronted by Boh Runga, refused to play at the sellout event in Auckland because it didn't like its time slot.
"For the level of support the band gets we
thought we deserved to play on one of the main stages at a decent time,"
stellar* manager Campell Smith told Sunday
News.
The band was scheduled to play on a small stage away from the main action in the early afternoon.
In a chat with some fans on Jan 8 2000, stellar* said: "We aren't playing The Big Day Out unfortunately. We were booked for the secondary stage and we really wanted to play the main stage. Never mind, we are going anyway and will have a good time."
In response to the above newspaper article, stellar* wrote in a recent email to a fan:"We are extremely professional in our approach to everything we do and are very loyal to our fans, if we were not you would not be receiving this reply. "Arrogant' , we think not."

We thought it about time to comment regarding the BDO. The BDO was
a huge success, it was a great event and whether we played there or not
is now irrelevant. The fact that nothing adverse occured is the only reason
the media is mentioning the fact that we did not play. It is the only slightly
sensational thing other than the event that happened. there
is no fall out between ourselves and the BDO promoters regardless
of what you might hear. We have almost always had great press in NZ, it
is just the same old pattern emerging as for all bands before us, and all
bands to come. We don't have the facts you have to make it up, and that
is exactly what you are seeing. We expect nothing less from the ill-informed.
As for 'sulking', yeah, we were really sulking as we jumped around to the
Chemical Brothers!
