Fine Art Series: Beautiful Ruins

what a glorious autumn afternoon it was when i shot this series. the light falling on the aged houses was so intriguing that i took nearly 60 shots and had to painstakingly narrow down my choices to three.

trenton, nj. is a city of forgotten historical treasures. i chose to photograph the abandoned houses along west state street because of their bright colors, their eerily well-kemptness and their testament to how the city has weathered through time.

in the series, i juxtaposed the houses against the oldest tree in trenton (which actually resided in my backyard of the time), which speaks to the way that time weathers both natural and human-made structures; the tree is missing many limbs but still looks elegant and wise, the houses are boarded up but painted vivid colors. the houses are no longer habitable. the tree continues to grow.

all three photos were taken with a nikon coolpix digital camera and lightly manipulated in photoshop 7.0.
