Fine Art Series: Erotic Series #1 (abridged - 5 of 9)

Artist's Statement

i created this series to challenge myself. i'd never tried to photograph nudes before, let alone someone i was dating. the idea posed interesting problems for me. i know that the media so often portrays lesbians as eye candy, existing solely for the pleasure of men. i wanted to make sure that this series would not objectify the subject, would not make my camera into a male bystander, and would clearly portray the love between the subject and the camera (me).

the actual photographing of the series was simple enough: with my trusty nikon coolpix (digital), i shot photos of the subject on her dark-colored couch. i knew that the contrast of her pale skin aginst the fabric would be visually interesting, in the realm of negative space. i tried to photograph her from a completely subjective point of view, which is really where i am. i cannot see her objectively because she is someone whom i love very much.

once i saw that i'd somehow captured this relationship via the images, i set about color-correcting them in photoshop 7.0 and deciding how to order them. that, honestly, was the hardest part.
