Journalistic Series: Inaugural Protest, D.C., 2000

Artist's Statement

when george w. bush was elected/selected in the fall of 2000, i heard there was to be a mass gathering in washington, d.c. to protest his inauguration. i knew i had to go.

visually, the event was prime for black-and-white expression. people's emotions were readily apparent on their faces, and few people minded me taking their picture.

the end result gives the feeling of timelessness, that this event could take place at any point in time; the protester in the gas mask illustrates this best. 1930's? present? it's hard to tell.

the event of his inauguration punctuated the feeling that many felt at the time: democracy has fallen. this series strives to both portray and examine that idea.

400-sp film, Asahi Pentax K1000.
