Journalistic Series: Way Out in the Deep South
Artist's Statement
when i set out to document this young, accomplished lesbian's daily life, i had never produced a photojournalistic series. the photos from the protest against bush's inauguration were very impromptu and w.o.d.s. was, by comparison, very premeditated. i spent days trying to come up with ideas (this was for a photojournalism course i took while studying at the university of georgia in 2002).
eventually, i saw a window of opportunity in showing what it's like for a lesbian to be out and very politically active in the "deep south". thusly, i set out to execute my first series of the kind (and the only one, to date).
photographing jen along with her gf was not a choice. at the time, they spent every waking hour together, so i didn't have much of a choice. it was a challenging, worthwhile project of which i now am proud.
