The Clarinet Family

Keep in mind that there are many different variations of the clarinet. These are just the most common types.

Eb (e-flat) Clarinet
A smaller version of the common Bb clarinet. It is about the size of a recorder but heavier. Plays notes in a higher range and can imitate the sound of a cornet or trumpet.
Bb (b-flat) Clarinet
The most commonly used clarinet. A great beginner clarinet. Has good low, middle and high range. Once a player learns to play this clarinet, they find it easier to play other types.
Alto Clarinet
This clarinet is longer than the traditional Bb clarinet. It is one octave lower than the high Eb clarinet. This clarinet however, is very hard to master and is a pain when it comes to tuning it.
Bass Clarinet
This clarinet is pitched one octave below the standard Bb clarinet. It is bigger than the alto clarinet but comes with a stand so the player doesn't have to hold it. It's a lovely lower woodwind instrument.
Contra Bass Clarinet
This clarinet is one octave below the bass clarinet. It can produce a nice sound if played properly. This is a very uncommon instrument because it is very expensive. The contra bass is commonly made out of metal and wood.
