The Clarinet Family
Keep in mind that there are many different variations of the clarinet. These are just the most common types.
- Eb (e-flat) Clarinet
- A smaller version of the common Bb clarinet. It is about the size of a recorder but heavier. Plays notes in a higher range and can imitate the sound of a cornet or trumpet.
- Bb (b-flat) Clarinet
- The most commonly used clarinet. A great beginner clarinet. Has good low, middle and high range. Once a player learns to play this clarinet, they find it easier to play other types.
- Alto Clarinet
- This clarinet is longer than the traditional Bb clarinet. It is one octave lower than the high Eb clarinet. This clarinet however, is very hard to master and is a pain when it comes to tuning it.
- Bass Clarinet
- This clarinet is pitched one octave below the standard Bb clarinet. It is bigger than the alto clarinet but comes with a stand so the player doesn't have to hold it. It's a lovely lower woodwind instrument.
- Contra Bass Clarinet
- This clarinet is one octave below the bass clarinet. It can produce a nice sound if played properly. This is a very uncommon instrument because it is very expensive. The contra bass is commonly made out of metal and wood.
