FAQ 3
Popups

Often when you are "investigating" a site, the webmaster tries to poke spam into your face with creatures from hell called popup consoles. As soon as you close one of them another opens and it can get very annoying.

There are a number of things you can do to stop this nonsense.

1. <ctrl>+w
If the popups are not persistent, hold down the <ctrl> key while tapping once the w key. This will close the currently selected window. Which one is that? the window with the white on blue title bar at the top.

The gray title bar at the top of the illustration does not belong to the currently selected window.

The while on blue bar underneath belongs to the currently selected window.

2. Deactivate java
The host relies on your browser to interpret commands it receives from the host. You can deactivate that interpreter and the browser no longer understands the command to display a popup.

2.1. For Netscape browsers

2.1.1. Click on the word Edit at the top of the window. This will produce a drop down menu.

2.1.2. At the bottom of the menu click on the word Preferences

2.1.3. To the left of the dialog box the previous step produces, you will find a white window.

2.1.4. Click on the word Advanced. Do not click on the + next to the word.

2.1.5. Make certain there is no check marks in the boxs before Enable Java and Enable JavaScript. If there are check marks, click on them and they will disappear.

When you have finished surfing, don't forget to activate them again by clicking on the boxes.

2.1.6. Click the OK button.

2.2. For Explorer browsers

Now, I use Explorer only on rare occasions so I can guarantee the following will work (would be glad to hear from folks who use Explorer), but theoretically it makes sense.

2.2.1. Click on the word Tools at the top of the screen.

2.2.2. In the drop down menu, click on the words Internet Options.

2.2.3. In the next form click on the Advanced tab.
2.2.4. Put the mouse cursor on the scroll bar, hold the left button down, and drag the mouse downward. The text will run up and off the screen.

2.2.5. Make certain the JavaJIT compiler enabled is unchecked.

2.2.6. Click the OK button.

3. Use a program like PopUpKiller
These programs are designed to kill undesired popups as soon as they are created. Frankly, it does a so-so job and requires fine tuning. If you want to find out more about such programs:

3.1. Go to www.google.com

3.2. Type the words PopUP Killer in the window at the top of the screen and hit the <enter> key. You will learn more than you really cared to know.
