This page is for everyone who is searching for something. Maybe you're not sure exactly what you want or need.
Maybe you know exactly what you want but you have no idea where to get it. This page will not answer those questions,
but it will tell you how to find the answers on your own.
There are hundreds of ways to search the Internet. Most methods of searching for web pages involve using a search engine.
There are many different search engines you may recognize some of them like Yahoo, Infoseek and Ask Jeeves. There are many others.
Some search engines are great for when you are not sure of exactly what you are looking for, others are great you are look for very
specific information.
The following is a list of popular search engines and what they are best used for. To use one of the search engines just click on their name or type the address
which will look something like this: http://www.search.com into the address bar of your browser.
Search Engines
- Yahoo- Yahoo is a great search engine that will find almost anything you need. It is especially good for the times
when you are not sure exactly what you want. You can use this search engine by either typing in some key words in the space provided on the top of the page,
or you can look through the 14 categories and their many sub-topics. Yahoo is good for looking for very specific information or for topics that do not have a large amount of info about
them on the web.
- InfoSeek- Infoseek, or GO as it is now called is a lot like Yahoo. It has more categories and I have found that it retrieves much
more specific information. When you get results from GO you always have the option to get additional information that is like each site found. Which means if you search for books by JD Salinger
one of the pages founds is all about his childhood, you can click on Find Similar Pages and GO will search for other pages about JD Salinger's childhood.
- Ask Jevees- Ask Jeeves is great for those new to searching the web. All you need to do is type in the question you want answered. Jeeves
will respond to your questions with a series of questions that have a variable that will direct you to site that best fits your needs. Sound confusing? It's not! Ask
Jeeves is one of the easiest search engines to use.
- Search- This search engine is powered to by Infoseek, but it is not as easy to use. Search will give you very specific results. When you get search results
you will notice
- Google- This search engine is very simple. There are no categories, you simply type in what you are looking for and it retrieves them. This is best when you know exactly
what you need. Try to make the key words as specific as possible.
When you get results from these search engines you will receive a long list of pages and a description of the information on the page. Often the description is
not very accurate, it may be just the first few lines of text from the page or it may be a collection of keywords from the page. Do not use these descriptions as the sole
basis for your evaluation of a page. Remember you can always hit the back button, it will become your best friend when searching the web.
Also remember to use key words that are general to your specific topic yet not too broad so that you get 100's of pages.
