In 1971, during preparations for a dinner for a group of guests, a waiter was slightly perturbed at seeing the ghostly figure of a tall man in grey clothes glide across the landing on the first floor. On mentioning the incident to colleagues, he learnt that others had seen the spectre but usually at two in the morning. Some believe the figure is that of an elderly family retainer of Tudor days who was killed in a fall down the stairs.
