| The phantom figure of an 18th century undergraduate has been seen on one of the staircases at St John's College. The figure is thought to be that of Doctor James Wood (1760 - 1839) who was to eventually become Master of the College.
As a student he was so short of money that he used to sit on the stairs clad in straw to keep warm. He also used the staircase lighting to study by. |
