During the English Civil War the Royalist family that lived in Hockenhull Hall buried their valuables in the grounds of the Hall, and fled the estate leaving a servant in charge. When troops arrived, they had obtained word of these valuables and raided the hall in search of them. Finding the valuables gone, the enraged troops blamed the elderly servant and set about torturing her, before finally decapitating her. The headless ghosts of this servant is reported to wander up and down the path close by the inn. |
