This house now has the reputation of being one of the most haunted houses in Britain,. It is cold and shabby, but there is a sense of the past present in every corner. Phantom bloodstains that cannot be removed, flowers are strewn about if placed in a certain room, a 'blue room' bedroom that nobody dares sleep in. The Guinness Book of Records has it down as the oldest house in Britain.
Ghosts have been seen in many places, most notable a Victorian gentleman figure on the staircase, an adolescent black servant boy who murdered an occupant lurks on the first floor corridor carrying a candle, a lady in yellow, and a figure which burst into the blue room one night when a new buyer slept there. The room had been left empty for forty years, the new owner was not surprised! Unfortunately, the hall was closed to the general public some years ago. |
