One of the buildings at Manchester Airport houses several freight companies, but only one part of the building, leased by Messrs Claridge and Co, is affected by the ghost of what is described as a "rather old man". Originally the building was a barrack block for No 613 (City of Manchester) Squadron, Royal Air Force, but it is highly unlikely that the ghost has any connection with those days. The ghost of the old man has been seen many times by employees, mainlcleaners and late-night workers. On one occasion he was seen by a shipping clerk late one night, when the ghost was described as having walked through the office in his bare feet. On another occasion, another shipping clerk saw the same old man sitting in a storeroom, but when approached the ghost vanished.
The police were called in on one occasion when noises were heard coming from an empty office, but when they investigated, although equipment was found to be scattered around, there was no sign of an intruder, although all doors were locked and windows securely barred. On another occasion, screams and other noises were heard coming from an empty office, and footsteps were heard pacing up and down the corridor, but nothing was ever found to indicate their cause.
There have been several sightings of the old man by various people not connected with the company, including a policeman called in to investigate unusual noises, but so far there has been no positive identification of the ghost. |
