IT appears that the extensively refurbished St Helens Theatre Royal does have a resident ghost, confirming the suspicions of Dave Brown of Whiston who asked (October 30) whether such a phantom had ever truly existed.   A knowledgeable follower of this page, asking to remain anonymous, says the theatre's ghost is the only St Helens example in Muriel Armand's 1993 book, 'The Ghosts of Lancashire'.   "According to the author, the apparition is thought to be the spirit of a manager who ran the theatre around the turn of last century when he committed suicide there". An usherette working at the theatre during the 1980s apparently gave the author an account of her sighting of a ghostly half-figure outline in black shoes with side buttons and spats; pinstripe trousers and either a long frock-coat or cloak.   She later learned of the old-time manager's body being found in the auditorium in identical attire. Then, in 1986 she spotted a lone mysterious figure standing in the dress circle who then mysteriously disappeared.
