WEST SUSSEX |
spread eagle |
The luxurious Spread Eagle Hotel was originally a coaching inn and dates back to 1430 and catered to the visiting aristocracy. Apparently, the White Room contains a secret passage which was used by smugglers trying to evade the Revenue men. Elizabeth I stayed overnight in the Queens Room during 1591 and is said to have watched the archers and villagers from the room's window. Little can be traced about the haunting in this building, but visitors and staff often hear unexplained tapping sounds. |
