An interesting integrated Asian dot.com stock traded on Nasdaq is Chinadotcom Corp. On February 20, 2002, CHINA reported the company became cashflow positive for first time. Begun in 2000 as the official China news agency Xinhua did a spinoff of Chinadotcom from China Internet. What does chinadotcom do? Many things, including Internet consulting, E-commerce client service to large U.S. and Asian customers including General Electric and Cathay Pacific, and operation of websites in China, Taiwan, Hong Kong which provide news and general entertainment. Chinadotcom is a venture capital source to web ventures. AOL Time Warner owns 6% of Chinadotcom. In the latest reported quarter (ending Dec.31), CHINA reported revenues of $17.8 million, slightly up from the previous quarter, but only half of the previous year's final quarter. Gross profit remained close to 38% vs last year. By slashing expenses, CHINA reduced its net loss from -$133.2 million to only -$10.2 million or a loss of $0.10 per share vs loss of $1.23 a year ago on 103 million shares outstanding. Adding interest income put them cashflow positive. According to the Aberdeen Group, investment technology spending in China will push the mainland from 7th place to 4th place for the market for IT products and services by 2005 due to rapid growth. As an example, it was reported on April 12 that chinadotcom Corp. acquired software firm OpusOne Tech Int'l Inc. in China. Earlier this year, chinadotcom teamed up with Nokia to start Nokia's wireless platform in the Mainland, a joint promotion of mobile services. Using its integrated subsidiaries Moeasy and iiL Corp. to build the wireless platform for Nokia SMS wireless application to deliver mobile pictures, messaging and ringer tones will benefit owners of the new Nokia 3350 and older 3330 phones according to Simon Bennett, Director of Business Development and Mobile Info Services for Nokia China. CHINA has a presence in eleven major cities in China.
