I would like to thank the Class of 1939 for inviting me to their reunion. I had a marvelous time listening to the stories and asking questions about what it was like being a teen in the late 30's. I also want to thank John Hoolihan and Muriel Olliges (Haege) for their help and assistance in getting me a copy of their class picture and helping me with other requests. Most of these alumni from the Class of 1939 attended grade school in one of the many one room country school houses that were present in many locations around the greater Lebanon metropolitan area (grin), and some of the brighter students who became bored with their own class' work, would work on the next higher grades studies and would often be allowed to skip to the next higher grade, so that it was possible to graduate from high school between the ages of 15 and 17. June North (Campbell) attended country school and was 15 when she graduated, and Muriel Olliges (Haege) attended the Lebanon school, skipped a grade and graduated at 16.

John Knoebel told me many stories, one about the old Highway 50 going over Silver Creek toward O'Fallon. As you get close to the creek today you can see where the old road went off to the right of the present Hwy. That road dead ends at the creek now, but you can see how much lower it is than the present Hwy. John said that it was a true saying when he was young that he would be in school "as long as it don't rain and the creek don't rise." He said when it rained hard the old road was often under water for days. Thanks again for sharing the memories and wonderful stories gang.

The Class of 1939 reminisce and look at old photos. (From upper left corner, clockwise)

John Paul Hoolihan looks at an old class picture (an unsubstantiated rumour
has it that the Pope may have named himself after this wonderful man, but then again,
maybe not - *big grin*) as Robert Haege (husband of Muriel), Muriel Olliges (Haege),
and Vera Rieger (Kuhn) look at old pictures.
